Two to watch

Went to the Lincoln-Otay Ranch game looking to check out George McCorley, who had a big game last week when Rocky Long was in attendance but I came away really liking the potential of Otay Ranch safety Devin Lloyd, as noted in my front page post. I actually wrote his name down during the Otay Ranch-St. Augustine game because he had two really big plays in an otherwise blowout - not to mention the fact that I was there to mainly watch Tariq Thompson - but this time I really got to see what he was about and I think everything he needs to improve on can be taught in SDSU's program (tackling technique (driving through the tackle), reading and reacting and improving his motor/intensity).

He updated his mid-year senior film, which is worth checking out, too:

Can We Expect More MBB Info?

Everything I've read or learned about MBB so far has been from the UT or insiders on Aztec Mesa that are allowed to attend practice. Ruben, are you allowed to attend practices? I, like many others are more interested than what's going on with football. I'm interested in football but can get all the info I need elsewhere. There aren't as many sources for MBB to date.

Play Action v. Shotgun

With such a run heavy offense, I have no idea why we pass from the shotgun so much on the rare occasions we actually do pass? I would think our big advantage would be the surprise of the pass by utilizing the play action?

We get into the shotgun and now the defense knows exactly what we are doing so they adjust accordingly. We lose the element of surprise. Just seems very strange to me.

Even if we don't use the play action at least the QB should take the snap from center and use a normal drop back, so as to not telegraph a pass is coming. The play action pass to the TE's seemed open on every 1st and 2nd down last night when USA was stacking the box.

Pros/Cons

Pros:
-Other than Chapman's interception setting up the FG, this was basically a defensive shutout.
-Compared to Utah St., SDSU will have an extra day of rest during a travel week.
-Pass rush was tremendous, especially on passing downs.
-Rashaad Penny could take it all the way. The only question mark about Penny at this point is his top end speed, and a though he got through the hole untouched, he was able to just barely out run the DBS on that 73 yd TD.
-Kalan Montgomery was bent, but didn't break.
-The defense got more experience against anotther dual threat QB; they'll face arguably the most dangerous runner in the conference next week.
-The refs didn't blow the white very much at all, even though they could have. I noticed a ton of holds being made by the o-line TEs and Nick Bawden that weren't called, other than Siragusa's obvious hold in the second half.
-Youngsters got a multiple series of playing time, finally.

Cons:
-Derek Babiash AND Billy Vaughn Jr.
-Chapman's pick and the little usage of the wideouts.

On Mikah Holder

Mikah Holder twisted his ankle against Fresno State but luckily, it was't a high ankle sprain or anything too serious. It's swollen and sore, so he's having a tough time making cuts, but was out at practice running straight lines on the sideline today.

We'll have a better idea if he'll be good to go against San Jose State later this week but just know that it doesn't seem serious.
