SDSU vs. UCLA in vegas!

This season sure started out rough, but is turning out to be one of the best ever. If indeed CBS's Bowl Projection pans out and we play LA in the Vegas Bowl with a double digit win season then this will go down as the best season in my caring about college football lifetime. Go Tecs! You are making us all proud to eat crow!

Wednesday notebook

Here's a tidbit to keep an eye on during Saturday's game and moving forward:

If SDSU thinks an opposing team will try a fake punt and/or switch formations after they line up, Damontae Kazee will likely be the punt returner, along with some other defensive players who aren't normally on special teams. They defense has pre determined defensive plays for when that happens and Kazee understands the coverages, unlike Holder. Just a heads up in case Kazee comes out for a return and you guys think Holder was pulled for some reason.

-Long said he'd like to play "anyone that's there" in the MW title game "as long as we are one of them."

-Said UNLV's backup QB is a very good scrambler.

-Said UNLV's duo of Kendally Keys and Devonte Boyd is the best set of receivers they've faced since Cal.

-Said all teams in the league are equally talented. Games ride on momentum shifts and execution.

Not Playing the Aztecs Decides The Mountain Division?

I think it is interesting that the three MWC teams, Boise, AFA and New Mexico battling it out for the Mountain division championship didn't have to play the Aztecs. None were on our schedule and all most likely would have taken another loss if they were. Certainly the Lobos - I have a hard time seeing us lose to the Lobos. We essentially knocked USU and CSU out of the running.

Game Day, SDSU vs. Utah

Through one game, it appears that Utah's front court is dialed in offensively, which is nearly the opposite of what we've seen with ours. I actually think this is a positive thing, because they'll be up against a far bigger and talented team defensively, and our 2 main scorers were basically shut down in the first game which I don't see happening again. Our guard play appears far better than theirs, although Hemsley will be tested in his first road game, and we have the better, more talented bench.

I see this game as a pick'em due to them having a pretty solid home court advantage, the Huntsman Center will be rockin' for sure. If we can get out of Salt Lake with a W, this is huge for our confidence moving forward, as well as on Selection Sunday, Utah will be a very impressive win if we can pull it off.

Maxwell Smith

Rocky Long said the coaching staff met with Max last week and presented the idea of returning for a sixth-year. They made sure to present it in a way where he wouldn't lose focus on the season.

A decision hasn't been made but "it's moving in a positive direction that way." Long thinks Smith will try and do it.

Long said there's no rush to apply for a medical waiver since Smith will be enrolled at SDSU in the spring. He also said he doesn't know if there's any cons to coming back.

I personally can't think of any cons that will keep Smith from coming back. I also don't see any cons to at least applying for the waiver right now and deciding later on if he should or shouldn't stay for a sixth-year. Does the application bind him to the school should he change his mind later? I doubt that.

Championship game and season ticket holders

The issue came up on another thread regarding whether season ticket holders will have any special access to tickets should the championship game be held here. I contacted the Aztec ticket office and here is their response:

If we host a championship game here on Dec. 5th season ticket holders will have access to purchase their same seats. Some areas will have to be used for visiting team or media purposes. Once more information is know on what will be occurring, an email will be sent out to all our ticket holders with information on the policies and procedures.
