Pat Brown

Cathedral Catholic tight end Patrick Brown was offered today by SDSU. He's a 2017 recruit I wrote about on the board during SDSUs passing tournament. About 6-4, 225ish and can really run. Looks very natural and not stiff coming out of his release. Like this early offer.

Official Visits question for Rocky

I know we do not have official visits until after the season but it seems we have several JC targets who may make their choice before the season ends. If we indeed win the West and play in the Championship game that will extend our season to December the 5th and signing day is Dec he 8th or so. The Bye week woud.have been a good weekt o bring in a couple.but I doubt that happened.

Press conference notes

Spoke highly of Wyo QB Cameron Coffman and his accuracy. Gets rid of the ball quick. Wyo RB Brian Hill's numbers speak for itself.

Said he spent Saturday watching college football.

"I enjoyed seeing the other teams struggles. You realize that you’re not the only one. I felt bad seeing some of those coaches on the sidelines. Some of those got ugly."

Said Wyoming is mistake prone and the Cowboys don't force many turnovers. Lose field position in games.

Malik Smith he expects Wyoming to get the ball out quick so most of the plays will be in front of him.

"You just go to get them down and not allow yards after the catch."

Basketball Practice Note

Friday practice was at the JAM. No Friday scrimmage, just fast paced drills. The coaches were very vocal today, seeking "game speed". Everyone participated except Shrigs and the two transfers. Max thinks he can start running in a couple weeks. Gill-Caesar is recovering more slowly. Before the practice, Jamaal and a friend were working hard with a private trainer. Having a post-graduate "home" may be a bigger recruiting benefit than I realized.

The versatility of this team is impressive. Everyone except the bigs can handle and score one way or another, so we can create matchup problems in many ways.

I just can't see us struggling to score this season. The ball is being distributed more effectively, and the % of makes is improved. With Hemsley on the court we can run our way to easy buckets. And one of my biggest impressions from the exhibition and a couple practices is that D'Erryl is a much more effective backup at the point this season. Not a great passer, and he still doesn't possess a consistent midrange jumper, but he can take and make a three, and he may be the best on the team at getting to the rim off the dribble ... and now he finishes with either hand. Defends as hard as his pal Dakarai. He deserves minutes and I hope he sees them.

We're going to see Dakarai breakout on offense in a couple games this year. He can get to the rim (though he doesn't finish particularly well), and his jumper is passable. With the way he defends, he should see enough minutes to develop some confidence.

The coaches seem to be excited about Nolan. He has good size and can shoot effectively beyond the arc. With a year of physical maturity and weight training, he'll be fun to watch.

Shrigley and Hoetzel work HARD on the sidelines, and seem to enjoy it. That will pay off for them.

I'd wager that Z threw down at least a half dozen slams off missed shots. And a great, great attitude. Already a leader.

The team chemistry appears to be very good this year. The ball is moving more quickly and ends up in the shooter's hands ... and everyone expects everyone else to make the shot. No question that Winston is much more mature than the earliest versions. You can see he is thriving in the senior leadership role.

Malik is so GIFTED. I wish he didn't glide through practice quite as much. But how can you convince a man that young and that talented that life is short and he needs to work hard everyday? Coach Fish cuts him no slack and I love that.

I've attended many practices over the years, and that is where you see Steve Fisher earning National Coach of the Year Awards. He defers to his coaches, and draws out their comments. But when he needs to make a point, he makes it. Sometimes quietly, sometimes loudly, but always directly. We're so lucky to have him on the Mesa.

Final thought. I believe the coaches know this year - barring more injuries - is likely to be special. There is a higher level of expectation at practice, more coaching to the high talent level. This will be a great ride.

Rayshawn Boyce Decommit?

I don't see his name anymore on the commit list. That being said, who seem to be the main DE targets now? Anthony Smith from Nevada? Locals Danny Bender (6'4 and 218 lbs...of Valhalla HS) or Steven Mason (6'7 and 250 lbs...of Torrey Pines HS)? Phillip Napoleon (Mount San Jacinto College) or Austin Vaimili (El Camino College) from the Juco ranks?

Should It Be The P6?

Even after the Big East fiasco, I just can't help thinking there was the seed of a great idea there.

College sports are about money and prestige. The availability of one enhances the other. The money is generated by television revenue. Television revenue is based on the number of fannies in seats watching the tube. The number of fannies is based on metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). Here's where several of the non-P5 schools rank:

Dallas (SMU) - #4
Houston (U of H) - #5
San Diego - #17
Tampa (USF) - #18
Cincinnati - #28
San Jose - #34
Las Vegas - #30
Memphis - #41
Hartford (UConn) - #47
Salt Lake City - #48
Fresno - #56
Albuquerque - #59
Boise - #81 - (and growing quickly)

Call it the National Conference.

Look at the amount of money in those economies. You could place a large professional sport league in those metro areas and be pretty competitive.

Let's compare with the potential media muscle of the great SEC.

Nashville - #36
Greenville, SC - #63
Knoxville - #65
Baton Rouge - #70
Columbia - #72
Fayetteville - #105
Lexington - #107
Gainesville - #173
College Station - #189
Tuscaloosa - #190
Athens - #219
Columbia, MO - #235
Auburn - #264
Starkville and Oxford MS don't exist. Trust me, I've been there.

Heck, there are about as many human beings in the Dallas MSA as there are in ALL the SEC cities. San Diego is as large as the bottom 11 SEC cities combined. Boise is larger than all but 5 of them. Green Bay would be in the upper half, as would be Duluth, Erie, Utica, Atlantic City and San Luis Obispo.

Yes, I'm discounting the value of sports tradition and regional teams. But come on, if you were starting all over, would you place a "major" college sports team in Starkville, MS, a town of 23,888 citizens?

Eventually, we'll get into a Power Conference, one way or another. There is so much money at stake that the downside of travel is almost irrelevant.

Maxwell Smith

Said he has considered the possibility of returning but that he's hasn't given it thought as of late. Doesn't plan to, either, until the season is over.

Also worth noting that he's been playing with a bum right throwing hand. He's icing it after each practice but if there were a game this week he would play.

Thoughts on the Colorado State game

What ever was said at halftime sure did the trick! The Aztecs took back the line of scrimmage! Each half was almost like two different football games.

Ya gotta love Dakota Gordon! Most of his time is spent doing the un-glorious work of clearing the way for the running backs. But he got a screen pass for 15 yards, broke a big run for 46 yards! Last week he took a screen pass for 30 some odd yards! It's good to see him get the spotlight from time to time. When he broke that 46 yard run, the field level camera showed just how hard he was running. What a gem!

Not sure if I'd like Jake Fely's new look!
