No offense but the reporting out of spring football camp has been almost non-existent

A couple of injuries, Sergio looked like a beast one day, Stamps and Penny looked good one day...

Who is the present starting unit on the o-line and how are the new starters looking?
How is the little redshirt frosh Washington looking? Playing at rb, in the slot, etc?
Does Chapman look improved and are any of the back up QBs looking good at all?
Who are the new guys on the starting defensive unit? Anyone looking like an impact player?
Phillips still "Killing it" at the nose?
Who are the 3 starters at LB and how is the depth looking there with the young guys?
Any receivers other than Holder looking capable?
Any hope for an improved passing game?

It would be nice to know what is going on out there. Perhaps Mketch can help out here as I believe he attends these practices.

I assume we will finally get something after tomorrow's scrimmage???
Thanks

Jim Sterk

Is one of four ADs to be awarded NACDA Athletic Director of the Year

Per goaztecs, the press release:

SAN DIEGO – San Diego State Director of Athletics Jim Sterk has been named a 2015-16 Under Armour AD of the Year honor by the National Association of Collegiate Director of Athletics (NACDA). The award will be presented on June 15 at the annual convention in Dallas.

"On behalf of the entire university, I want to express how extraordinarily proud we are of Jim Sterk's accomplishments,” San Diego State University President Elliot Hirshman said. “Jim's integrity and his focus on supporting our student-athletes represent the best of inter-collegiate athletics."

The ADOY Award highlights the efforts of athletics directors at all levels for their commitment and positive contributions to student-athletes, campuses and their surrounding communities.

Currently in his seventh season at SDSU, the national recognition for Sterk comes at a time when Aztec athletics continues to enjoy record-breaking successes. On the competition field and court, academic and community service or fundraising, San Diego State is enjoying unparalleled success in school history.

Since Sterk’s tenure at SDSU began in February of 2010, 52 San Diego State teams have advanced to NCAA postseason play, with 17 top-25 finishes and six teams finishing in the top 10. Since the beginning of the 2012-13 academic year, the Aztecs have claimed 30 team conference titles.

San Diego State remains one of the top football and men’s basketball programs nationally, posting the third-highest combined winning percentage this decade (trailing only Ohio State and Louisville).

The 2015-16 season is shaping up to be another great season for the Aztecs. Already, SDSU has won outright conference titles in football, women’s soccer and men’s basketball. In addition to winning the program’s 20th conference title, the football team won its final 10 games (second-longest active win streak to Alabama) on its way to a claiming the Hawaii Bowl championship.

Currently, a record 335 Aztec student-athletes are scholar-athletes (for a 3.2 semester grade-point average or a 3.0 cumulative GPA) and 13 of the 19 teams posting a fall semester GPA of 2.75 or higher. Of the 19 programs, 18 have posted their highest GPA during Sterk’s tenure.

The San Diego State athletic department is coming off of a record fundraising year in which the department raised $5.2 million toward the scholarship fund, more than 16 million for the Coryell Legacy, an initiative to endow scholarships and completed funding for the $15.8 million Jeff Jacobs JAM Center basketball facility.

Sterk is one of only four athletic directors at the FBS level to be honored. The others, which include two from the Big Ten Conference and one from the SEC, are Gary Barta (Iowa), Jim Phillips (Northwestern) and Scott Stricklin (Mississippi State).

Sterk earned his bachelor’s degree from Western Washington in 1980, where he was a four-year letterwinner in football and also earned a letter playing basketball. He received his master’s degree from Ohio in 1986. He has also served as the athletic director at Portland State and Washington State.

Notes from practice

Tyler Morris tweaked his knee during the closed scrimmag and it ended up being serious. Will need his 4th operation. ACL operation likely. 9 month or more type rehab.

Nick Bawden is wearing a cast on his left arm. His finger split open, got stitched then got infected during the scrimmage. But he is still practicing.

Ryan Dunn twisted his ankle near the end of practice. Didn't look too serious..

Sergio Phillips killed it during practice today and Rocky said he did very well during the scrimmage.

Chapman, Stamps and Holder also performed well during the scrimmage according to Rocky

Linebackers struggled (except Munson).

Rocky said there were too many dropped snaps with both the QBs and centers at fault.

Stamps had the only fumble of the scrimmage but it occurred right after he caught a pass.

Where do all of the UCLA recruits go when Alford is fired?

I listened to Sirius College hoops this morning and there was a caller that they just let rant on and on about Alford. How they have no defense, his son plays 35 min a game shooting less than 40% and catch play a lick of defense(this sounds strikingly close to another coaches son) and he just doesn't seem to have control of the team.

So if Alford is fired, when does that class end up. Could the Aztecs be positioned to steal 1 or 2 ?

Combine results

Darrell Greene finished tied for 11th in the bench press (28) but his arms are relatively short and his 40 time was 5.2. He measured in at 6 feet, 2.6 inches tall and 320 pounds. His broad jump of 8-10 is pretty darn good for his size though.

Pearce Slater ran a slow 5.42 40 yard dash but was listed at 6-foot-6.6. I haven't seen his weight or arm lentgh listed anywhere but I assume it is very high. His broad jump of 7-8 was below average.

Epic Loss

I suppose if we're going to lose, we might as well make it historic.

For us fans who have been around awhile, the most painful home loss ever was in 2005 when we squandered a 10 point lead over UNLV in the final 28 seconds, then lost in OT.

This in now #2 on the list. Really, really, really bad loss.

PS, that 2005 team went on to lose 6 in a row, and was our last losing season. Fisher and staff have a lot of coaching to do between now and Tuesday.

NCAA tournament

Even with the loss yesterday, if they can somehow pull off a win in New Mexico(50/50 in my opinion) beat Vegas and win the first two in the MWC tourney, they have a 94% chance of getting into the NCAA tournament as an at large.

25 win seasons including conference tournament wins are usually the magic number to get into the dance.

BTW, who's going to Vegas for the tournament. Let's all try and go to dinner one of the nights. Ruben can buy! jk

Boise Game Thread

Don't forge to wear BLACK to the game.

None of us would've predicted that Aztecs would be 8 point favorites vs Boise in this game. Boise Junior James Web (leading scorer & rebounder) has a sprained MCL, an injury he suffered against UNLV on Tuesday. He is officially day to day but don't see him playing vs Aztecs tomorrow.

The Broncos are 95th in RPI. Reminder they were predicted to be at the top of MWC this year based upon their co-champion status last year and return of majority of their significant players.

Aztecs' RPI is currently 49 and Fresno is 91. Arkansas Little Rock is 35. Cal is 18.

Will see if I can convince wifey to head over to watch SDSU Baseball face #22 Kentucky after basketball game.

Former SDSU recruit Zach Gentry is now "permanently" a tight end at Michigan.

It's hard to predict his future if he decides to transfer after reading this piece by a New Mexico columnist: http://www.abqjournal.com/728459/sp...ght-in-bad-business-of-college-athletics.html

Mountain West Basketball

Let's take a quick look at the state of MW basketball this season. Just how bad are we? Or, put another way, if we don't win our conference tournament, do we end up in the NIT because all of our conference victories are discounted.

RPI is a poor indicator because it doesn't effectively factor in where a game is played. I prefer the Pomeroy rankings because they're more thorough.

Pomeroy has us as the 10th best conference in the land, behind the P5, Big East, American, Atlantic 10, and Colonial (the last having its best season ever). Our #10 ranking is actually up from #12 last year, mostly because San Jose St is no longer an anchor ... and kudos to their coach. We were also #10 two years ago, so overall, our conference is performing about where you would expect ... though it's down from the time when we competed for the best non-P5 conference.

Let's compare with the Pac 12, which is having a very good year. The Bracket Project has seven P12 teams in The Dance, with Washington in the First Four Out. Oregon, the top-ranked team in the conference, and a projected 3 seed, lost to both Boise and UNLV on the road, and barely beat Fresno at home. We took down Cal, a 7 seed, and barely lost to Utah (a projected 4 seed) on their court. There's no question our conference is not deep this year, but our upper tier teams are solid.

Next, let's look at the other teams that are locks in the tourney. Is there a single team this year that you would say the Aztecs can't beat? If we're truly a 12 seed (where we presently project), shouldn't there be at least a dozen teams that are clearly better? I'm just not seeing those teams, are you? There have been several reasons for our conference success, probably the biggest three being the addition of Shrigley, Winston's consistency, and Malik's emergence. Are there any other teams that have effectively added that much firepower mid-season?

If we beat Boise and UNLV, then reach our conference semis or finals, I don't see us being locked out. The selection committee will factor recent performance, and our offense has been much better over the last few weeks (we've moved up nearly 50 spots in offensive efficiency). The only ways we don't get an at-large berth are if a. we go in the tank and deserve the NIT or b. we give one of our inexplicably horrific performances on national TV in our conference semis or finals.

PS, if we had beaten the Toreros, an at-large berth wouldn't even be a question. We'd be in, with at least a 10 seed. That loss haunts us. The only positive is its bad taste may have contributed to our run through the conference schedule.
