Summer Basketball

Article on SDSU's summber basketball:
http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com...asketball-summer-workouts-20180806-story.html

I was surprised by Jeremy's quote:
“It’s just a better feel,” senior guard Jeremy Hemsley said, “because we don’t really have as many knuckleheads as we did in the past — dudes just doing crazy stuff off the court. This squad, everybody is about getting better. The fact that we have everybody here is showing. We’ve been close, we’ve been hanging out off the court and on the court.

“Once the season comes around, it’s going to be obvious how the chemistry is. … I feel like last year it took everybody a long, long time to get on the same page and have the same motive.”

So he is calling Kell, Pope, Rooks, Montana and Gill-Ceasar knuckleheads or at least a couple of them. I like how the hype is always great at the start of the season. I hope what he is saying is true and we get off to a fast start, however I must see to believe. Anyone going to the work out sessions? If so, what are you observing?

Talking some football

To state the obvious is not been any news about football. Looking at all these basket posts makes me want to take Dramamine. So here are my thoughts and concerns about the upcoming season.
I think barring major injuries like a quarterback, or multiple hits at one position I think the lowest win total we all have this year would be eight. I think that's about 10% likelihood. I suspect we'll have another 10 win season.

So here is what I see obviously we have three very good running backs in Washington, Jasmine, and Williams. They want back he's been kind of a slow starter so far he might take off like a rocket in the fall will see. Then, of course, we got Zidane Thomas coming in and maybe Jordan Byrd. I wouldn't be surprised if Byrd gray shirt's it and even if he does get in most likely will get redshirted.
We have a very strong line as long as it doesn't take too many dings during the season... For our running game, they should be strong. I think Chapmans a good quarterback won a lot of games for us and he led the most amazing last-minute drive in Aztec history, 94 yards in one minute at Wyoming. That he can do if he has the blocking and WR's that catch the ball
however, of blocking, but I would give a three as for pass blocking as opposed to a nine for run blocking.
The difference in performance I put down to something simple. You do not get better at football by not doing something often in a game., That's the reason we're not good at it, we just don't do it enough in a game to get that rhythm and pattern.

As for wide receivers so far it's all potential and not much actual. We know Trevillion 's a big threat but he also drops a few more than he should. As Wilson is concerned,d he can block he has excellent speed, great size and can jump yet he was only recruited by us and Iowa. That tells you he needed a lot of work. He needs to run precise routes and get separation. Macklin somewhat the same thing a lot of potential.
It wouldn't surprise me if the two most effective receivers on our team turn out to be munchkins BJ Busbee and the Ethan Dedeaux, the little guys. They simply are extremely quick run excellent routes if the ball is thrown to them they catch it. Later in the season that JR Justice and Colby Smith might be in that mix. Ian Richardson has some talent too and maybe hopefully Wilson and Macklin will show their stuff.

At this moment I'm not terribly impressed with the WR's (I am of the TE) and neither is Rocky. As for the defense I really like Anthony Luke and Chibu they both did very well in limited action and of course, Noble Hall is solid in the middle. We have to get a much better pass rush this year or it's going to cost us enough games that we will indeed be at around eight wins. Behind them, you have Cheatham, Robinett, and a couple other young guys with great potential but maybe not ready for prime time. Jalili Licky he's just going to be a pass rusher hasn't got the muscle mass to tango with the big boys very long.
Best linebackers in the league without a doubt Lakalaka is a predator eating everything that comes his way, Tezino hasn't gotten much press in spite of five tremendous games at the end of the season. I think anything that comes near him this season is going in a Black Hole with the number 44 on it. Cassidy and the like are very good they'll be much better this year.

Is a secondary is concerned now we have three solid guys back there Parker Baldwin, Tariq Thompson, and Ron Smith? So much good backup talent at the Warriors with Trenton Thompson and some of the others I'm sure that come up with a good combo. Still worried about the cornerbacks Ron Smith's a good corner but when we were playing Fresno and Boise a couple other times and we had no pass rush he got scorched. Certainly has the potential to be one of the best corners in the league. Adding to the safeties I think Hawkins has a good chance of being one of the starters. The roster shows him back at cornerback but I suspect that's just another screwup. So much young talent and potential Daryl Hall, Venable. Woods, a couple of freshmen that looks solid. Barko I justdon't know how good he is, we will see.

On special teams, of course, will be missing Penny but we will have chased Jasmine and Washington and Ethan Dedeaux and maybe BJ Busby in punt return .. BJ had six kicks returned for touchdowns in his senior year is a shifty little guy with speed. Bobby Houck is no longer there so remains to be seen whether they'll be a drop off in special-teams so my concerns come down to the passing game which involves the receivers blocking, and primarily the pass rush which leads to all those turnovers...

Pumphrey watch

Training camps are up and running in the NFL, so I thought it would be of interest to see how one of our star running backs, Donnel Pumphrey is fairing this season after a not so wonderful start of his NFL career last year.

From Dave Zangaro of NBC sports.com:

2. Today was the best I have ever seen Donnel Pumphrey look. Now, maybe you have to take it with a grain of salt because he was mostly going against the third-team defense, but he did some really nice things. The Eagles kept feeding him the rock and he kept picking up chunks of yards running between the tackles. He also still looks smooth as a receiver out of the backfield. After one carry, where he actually drove the tackler forward for another yard, Pump got up and puffed out his little chest. It seems his confidence is up. If I had to guess right now, he’s very much in the mix for a roster spot and might even be a frontrunner.

Kashan Griffin

Looks like there is a new addition to the 2018 class, as WR/DB Kashan Griffin announced he will be playing for the Aztecs a day or so ago. I think he may be coming on as a scholarship player, but he looks to be a pretty good athlete in his tape. I believe he will be starting out at WR initially. If you go by recruiting sites or stories on him, he had offers from ASU, Oregon, Nevada, New Mexico and others. Griffin also participates in track (11.39 100 meter, 21.45 LJ, 42.2 TJ). Apparently was limited his SR year by an ankle injury.

Basketball Coaches

It looks like Tim Shelton will not be replaced. That probably means they'll eventually slide JD Pollock up a seat and hire a player development coach. Makes me wonder why they haven't done it already. Maybe he can make as much money doing what he's doing and Dutcher is just maintaining flexibility.

Does anybody have any further information on the last coaching spot?
