Very relieved/excited about Jalen's decision. His return to SDSU was not a given because of his recognized upside. One big talent makes a huge impact on the success of a college basketball program. If he had left, I'm afraid we would have faced the proverbial "rebuilding year".
So let's take a quick look at next year's team. Barring injury Jalen, Devin W. and Matt M. start and are major contributors. That's three guys capable of MW all-star recognition.
On paper and at present, Jeremy H. and Nolan N. are the other two starters. Both were less impactful last season than they will need to be for us to be competitive in Hawaii … and our HI performance will be a big indicator for MW basketball success (the field is stacked, and we're the only mid-major in the host group). Jeremy needs to rebuild his shooting stroke and limit turnovers, and Nolan needs to improve greatly at the defensive end.
We do not appear to be nearly as deep this year as last. As much as I loved Jeremy as a freshman PG, I'm now less confident in his ability to spell Devin; and I'm still waiting for a single practice observer to say Adam Seiko is capable of providing quality minutes at the point. Though I really appreciated his effort, Jordan Schakel was overmatched physically last season. He can do something about that in the weight room this Summer.
Regarding our freshman class, I'm not sold on either of the Mensahs this season. Both look like projects to me. If Nolan can't defend and we're forced to slide Jalen to the center, bigger teams will victimize us in the paint. Aguek Arop is a wildcard to me. Not sure what position he'll play at this level, nor where his talent stacks up.
For me, the main question entering the season is whether we can compete with Nevada for supremacy in the MW. The Martins and Jordan Caroline are returning for their senior year, the PG will be back as a senior (albeit returning from an Achilles injury), and they have a 5-star big off the bench. That's in addition to an entire cast of mid-major all-stars that become eligible. Nevada will be a beast this year, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the pre-season Top 10. That's way higher expectations than SDSU can hope for.
Without great depth, avoiding injuries will be a key. Another will be whether Jeremy and Nolan can get to another level. We don't need to be 9-deep, but Jordan and couple of the freshmen will need to provide quality minutes.
