Jack Lookabaugh

First off, thanks for the article, Ruben.

Looks like the type of player Rocky loves to recruit, smart and religious. He has good size, already, 6' 5" and 280 pounds, and the former tight end seems to have some good foot speed.

Already has offers from Army, Air Force, Syracuse and others.

Yeah, only two stars, yet that 5.4 means he is a on the borderline to being a Rivals three star player

I sort of hopes he cuts others off, and commits, soon.

Toughest non-league schedule for new coach (Power 5): UCLA's Chip Kelly

i
This will be a transition year in Westwood, as the Bruins adjust to Kelly's schemes and standards. In addition to a nine-game league slate that includes crossovers with Washington, Stanford, Oregon and Cal, the Bruins visit defending Big 12 champion and CFP participant Oklahoma in Week 2. They then return home to face Fresno State, arguably the nation's biggest surprise of 2017, when it went 10-4 after going 1-11 the previous season. Arizona State's Herm Edwards also will be tested right away as the Sun Devils host Michigan State and then visit Pac-12 slayer San Diego State. "

SDSU Basketball '18-'19

Very relieved/excited about Jalen's decision. His return to SDSU was not a given because of his recognized upside. One big talent makes a huge impact on the success of a college basketball program. If he had left, I'm afraid we would have faced the proverbial "rebuilding year".

So let's take a quick look at next year's team. Barring injury Jalen, Devin W. and Matt M. start and are major contributors. That's three guys capable of MW all-star recognition.

On paper and at present, Jeremy H. and Nolan N. are the other two starters. Both were less impactful last season than they will need to be for us to be competitive in Hawaii … and our HI performance will be a big indicator for MW basketball success (the field is stacked, and we're the only mid-major in the host group). Jeremy needs to rebuild his shooting stroke and limit turnovers, and Nolan needs to improve greatly at the defensive end.

We do not appear to be nearly as deep this year as last. As much as I loved Jeremy as a freshman PG, I'm now less confident in his ability to spell Devin; and I'm still waiting for a single practice observer to say Adam Seiko is capable of providing quality minutes at the point. Though I really appreciated his effort, Jordan Schakel was overmatched physically last season. He can do something about that in the weight room this Summer.

Regarding our freshman class, I'm not sold on either of the Mensahs this season. Both look like projects to me. If Nolan can't defend and we're forced to slide Jalen to the center, bigger teams will victimize us in the paint. Aguek Arop is a wildcard to me. Not sure what position he'll play at this level, nor where his talent stacks up.

For me, the main question entering the season is whether we can compete with Nevada for supremacy in the MW. The Martins and Jordan Caroline are returning for their senior year, the PG will be back as a senior (albeit returning from an Achilles injury), and they have a 5-star big off the bench. That's in addition to an entire cast of mid-major all-stars that become eligible. Nevada will be a beast this year, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the pre-season Top 10. That's way higher expectations than SDSU can hope for.

Without great depth, avoiding injuries will be a key. Another will be whether Jeremy and Nolan can get to another level. We don't need to be 9-deep, but Jordan and couple of the freshmen will need to provide quality minutes.

NCAA Baseball Thread

Aztecs start off with LSU on Friday at 1pm on ESPN-U.

LSU has 2 primary starters and I'm guessing SDSU will get their #2 starter on Friday with their #1 to go up against Oregon St if they win.

Their #2 starter(Zack Hess) is a fire-baller. He strikes out a lot of hitters, gives up quite a bit of walks and is susceptible to the long ball. He's given up 12 this year. His ERA is 4.43 against some really tough competition so don't let that fool you. He doesn't give up a lot of small ball innings meaning a walk and a dinger is what he's known for. His against BA is only .227

If they go with their #1(Ma'Khail Hilliard) against SDSU, his ERA is 3.79 and doesn't give up the long ball much at all, with only 4 all year. His against BA is .247, doesn't walk many and strikes out fewer than 1 per inning.

SDSU has the edge with their overall pitching. Neither team excels at hitting Home Runs. Both teams play a lot of small ball. If SDSU gets by LSU's starting pitching, their bullpen is weak and gets wrecked a lot, albeit against some pretty good competition.

Upcoming McDaniels Decision

With May 30th decision two days away, what can we assume happens if he decides to return or turns professional? If he does return, the Aztecs will have an awfully good team next year and if he explodes during his sophomore season, then it could be really special. Assuming he returns, then either Gath or Chang will choose the Aztecs.
Now, if McDaniels turns professional, then hopefully we can pick up both Gath and Chang. The upcoming season will rest a lot upon new people and depending upon their maturation will either be average, good or maybe even better. What will also happen as we enter the 2019-20 season is we will be loaded and depending on additional recruits we could be awesome. With Flynn starting at guard and all new people from 2018 class as sophomores, then skies are the limit.
Either way on McDaniels, the Aztecs should be a solid club. I for one would really like to see him return and actually put up double double numbers before attempting to turn to the professional side of things! Go Aztecs!
