Jalen

Nice article on Jalen in The National this morning. Here's the link. It's a subscription e-rag, so let me know if this won't open for you.

https://theathletic.com/594235/2018...ter-his-surprising-return-to-san-diego-state/

He's so focused on improvement that he may be the guy who can remain in the present even though he sees the big pay-off in the future.

The fact that he wasn't named to the pre-season MWC all-star team would hopefully provide extra kindle for the fire. The Nevada frontline is impressive, but they don't possess Jalen's upside.

Air Force Game

In keeping with my terrible prediction capabilities...

Air Force at this time looks like their running game is in full gear. That and our coming off an emotional win in Boise along with our injuries on Offense, I can say with certainty, SDSU losses by 2 touchdowns.

This will be the Aztecs worst passing performance of the year and our Freshman RB's will find no lanes to run through.

The recruiting elephant in the room

Coryell era aside, It has never been a better time to be an Aztec football fan. This program has established a hard-nosed never-give up mentality and the kids believe in the system and their coaches. We are consistently competing with mid-major programs for coveted recruits, and even beating out some big-time ones on occasion. Things are looking bright.

However, the quarterback position has consistently eluded this team despite all the success. The best we are able to get are game managers that never really seem to develop past their freshmen or sophomore success. And as we have so often seen, when these QB's are called upon to step up and win a big game, they more often than not wilt under that pressure and make a series of fatal mistakes to lose the game (going back to Ryan Lindley). How in god's name can a program like Hawaii get a qb like Cole McDonald despite their horrid record and tradition of losing?

So my question is, what is going on? I would think that SDSU's success, strong running game, strong offensive line, need at QB (a freshman could compete for the starting job), would be extremely attractive factors for a high caliber recruit. What is going on? Think of what this team could have done with a passing game to compliment Penny or Pumphrey. I just don't get it.

YOY Passing/Receiving Stats

Holder led the team last year in both # of receptions and receiving yards with 43 receptions and 603 yards. Nobody else had half as many receptions. Trevillion was next up with yardage of 327.

Chapman had total of 1873 passing yards in 13 games.

With AGNEW I'm predicting SDSU passing attack will DOUBLE all of those metrics. Please spare me the talk about Chapman...........time to MOVE ON.

Boise State game

Aztecs are a two touchdown underdog in this game. According to Kirk Kenney in this morning’s Tribune article, 13 different Boise State players have caught passes this season. That includes five wide receivers! Do you think, in the past two weeks, we have shored up our pass defense?!

Problem spots in the lineup

Having closely watched the DVR'd replay after having been in the stadium, I noticed a few problems that needs attention in order to prepare for Boise - and if a doofus like me noticed them, our staff AND BOISE's staff will too.

First, at least against EMU, Ismael was clearly the weakest link in the O-line. As examples, on one play where EMU's LB #51 blitzed from an inside position, that guy was Ismael's man to pick up and he whiffed on the block giving Agnew no chance to avoid #51. On two other plays when Ismael and Pope were double teaming an EMU rusher and Pope needed no help, Ismael looked around futilely trying to find someone else to block. I get that's what he should be doing but are linemen taught to just stand in one place rather than moving around to block somebody else?

Second, although Baldwin is playing lights out in run support and blitzing the QB, he was really bad in defending the pass. I didn't see any of the Sac State game so don't know how he performed in that one and didn't look as carefully at the Stanford and ASU replays but I have to wonder whether the fact he has so many newbies around him this year isn't detrimental to his own coverage. Darren Hall had a terrific game. He didn't just make that "great" INT, he had a sack, at least one pass breakup and a couple tackles on running plays outside. Here's hoping Hall replaces Woods as the starter at CB. Woods' game is improving but I think Hall is going to be a star.

ASU

Seeing N'Keal Harry dominate is one thing but watching Danny Gonzales running Rocky's scheme with elite talent is a different animal. That defensive front is filled with guys who have speed and are all well put together, especially Derius Slate and Koron Crump. Harry and Crump may be the most impressive physical specimens SDSU plays all year.

Slot receiver Kyle Williams is definitely going to be a tough cover on offense too.

Lucas Johnson, QB

From the school of what ever happened to.......................

This is the kid from Mt. Carmel High School that flipped away from SDSU in the 11th hour, just before LOI day couple of years ago. He'd committed very early to SDSU and it was a total shock when he bolted at the late stage.

In his Redshirt Sophmore season, he has suffered a season ending surgery days before game 1 of this season.

Yellow Jackets are 1-3 now and despite the fact that they had 7 starter returning on Offense, look very inept. Not expected to be bowl eligible this season. Paul Johnson runs a triple option.
