Basketball presser

FYI, James Webb suffered a sprained MCL and is considered day to day for the SDSU game on Saturday. I wouldn't be surprised if they keep him on the bench considering they're best shot to make the NCAA tournament is to have him in Vegas.

Noteworthy:
-Fisher is still unsure if the team's resume is strong enough to make the tournament without a conference title in Vegas.
-Fisher said SDSU will prepare as if Webb is playing, just like teams preparing for Hemsley even though he has been coming off the bench.
-Fisher hopes Webb will play "because it will make them a full team and we're all better served if we can have that."
-Hemsley is still limited in practice and Fisher is still "uncertain" about him starting tomorrow.

Same old Media Relations Crap

Send out twitters counting down so many days until Spring football and then Dead Silence, no Spring Roster no article by Mc Grane.(no Blame on Mick) but they should have had it as part of a package . There was at one time a spring media guide believe it or not. I might ad athat Boise,Fresno,USU and CSU who are not starting Spring practice have updated 2016 Rosters.

Practice No. 2

Today was practice No. 2 and the setup was very similar to the opening spring practice on Monday. The only difference was how practice ended: SDSU coaches challenged the players to try and hit one of the field goal poss from about 30 yards out. One of the assustant coaches made contact, so the players did an extra running drill to end practice.

Moving forward, SDSU will have a closed light practice on Friday (with shoulder pads) and a closed scrimmage on Saturday in full pads.

The next practice open to the media will be on Monday.

Some notes:

-As mentioned in another thread, Jabril Clewis will miss spring camp due to academics. He can return to the team program this summer if his grades are back in order.

-Christian Chapman's throwing motion looks much quicker than I remember and it definitely looks like he has more zip on the ball after watching him for two days. I felt like he and Walker have looked better during 7v7s and 11v11s compared to Agnew but he's still a step above everyone else in terms of consistency and his ball placement.

-Nick Bawden continues to look solid with the first unit. You can tell he's the only FB with game experience and that's why he's currently the top guy..

-Daniel Brunskill had a strong day and was counted on as the last read during 7v7s and came up with some tough catches.

-I've noticed that Sergio Phillips never gets called out by the coaching staff for lining up out of position which is a big improvement for him. Remember, he originally signed with SDSU as a center and has been moved back and forth ever since. He has never showed frustration and has worked hard wherever they put him. He's definitely earned his spot with the first team.

-SUU transfer Dominic O'Brien will be in the mix for the right guard spot, which he's currently competing for with Antonio Rosales. He moves his feet very well and has nice size.

-Derrick Achayo moved from tackle to center for practice today. Definitely fits the mold better at that spot.

-Ryan Pope took a hard fall on his knee but toughened it out and had another good day. It's going to be tough to pick between him and Joe Salcedo for the open tackle spot. We'll see if Pope has improved on his run blocking next week when the team is in full pads. That can be the deciding factor on whether or not he emerges as the guy.

-The DBs continued to look like the best unit on the field today. Damontae Kazee, Malik Smith, Kameron Kelly and Parker Baldwin make plays every time I watch them up close. It's also worth noting that Kazee is always with the first team but it seems like Tony White's plan for camp is to rotate Billy Vaughn Jr., Kalan Montgomery and Derek Babiash with the first team at the other corner spot during each practice. Vaughn worked with the ones on Monday and it was Montgomery's turn today. The next practice is closed to the media but I'm betting Babiash will be with the first-team.

I like this plan. It gives all three a chance to prove that they can start and it makes sense considering they are all pretty similar in terms of size and play style. I wouldn't be surprised if any one of them wins the starting gig in the fall but my early pick is between Vaughn and Babiash - probably Babiash but it's very close.

Vaughn's breaking ability has really improved now that he's healthy and Babiash is just a freak athlete for his size. The offense called crosses during 7v7 and Babiash got beat by Judge over the middle but he was still able to keep up with him when cutting upfield (that's saying a lot since Judge may top-five on the team in terms of top-end speed).

It's also worth noting that all three corners are just juniors so that will give time for guys like Ron Smith and incoming corner Tayler Hawkins to develop under White.

-Kazee had the pick of the day, diving for an interception in front of Eric Judge on a post route. He should repeat as DPOY unless MW quarterbacks decide not to test him next season.

-In terms of offensive skill guys, it's clear that the game-breaking type athletes are still DJ Pumphrey and Mikah Holder (not to mention Mikah's chemistry with Chapman will pay off big this year).

Those two are the only guys who are consistently able to make one guy miss and burn everyone else up the field on any given rep. Chase Favreau and Rashaad Penny (as a running back/slot receiver) do it every now and then but not nearly as consistent as Holder and Pumphrey.

Who's my guess to be the next game breaker? Favreau is a possibility that will surprise most fans. Jerry Chaney is a sleeper. Right now it's hard to say.

-Eric Judge and Jimmy Walker connected on the longest 1v1 rep today. Judge ran by walkon corner Kevin Walcott (who is a very impressive athlete) on a streak and caught the ball at its high point in stride for a 50+yard TD.

Christian Cumberlander also had a nice over the shoulder catch from Mason Hall about 40 yards down the sideline. Walcott was also defending that one.

-The QBs aired it out much more today than they did on Monday. I wouldn't be surprised if Coach Morgan made it a point to them after the first practice to take some more chances downfield on Wednesday.

-Kendrick Mathis has potential as a WR because of his athleticism but he has dropped two or three makeable catches during each of the two opening practices. His teammates seem really encouraging though and the hope is he will be much more comfortable at WR by the end of camp compared to now.

-Marcus Stamps has been catching the ball very well in these first two practices and I wouldn't be surprised if he plays himself into a h-back/fullback role if the coaches decide too many running backs are ahead of him moving forward.

-Calvin Munson had the pick of the day, a one-handed over the head snag against Ryan Agnew's screen pass. Munson read it perfectly and tried to deflect it but somehow held onto it.

-I know Parker Baldwin looks like he's the Aztec of the future after Na'Im McGee graduates but Jeff Clay will always make a solid case during his career. Baldwin is very smart in pass coverage and overall deserves his spot on the depth chart, without question, but Clay has moments where it looks like the Aztec position was built for him. His instincts and run support always stand out in 11v11s but his pass coverage/ball skills always seem to lack during 1v1s. That's why he's currently at warrior with the second team.

-I wish I could tell you guys more about the offensive and defensive linemen but we really won't get a feel for them until next week when the pads come on. They've spent most of these practices working on the intricacies of their position (feet, steps, hand placement, bend etc.).

SDSU-Wyo

22 all late in the first half. SDSU went with its big starting lineup without Hemsley again today. Kell, Pope, Shepard, Cheatham and Spencer.

Josh Adams has made three threes so far and is looking like the only guy SDSU is having trouble with. Star players struggle to hit their averages against the Aztecs but that may not be the case tonight if Adams keeps it up.

Big updates

Big news

Maxwell Smith is going back and forth on whether or not he wants to be a player-coach on the team (basically, a grad assistant) or actually play one last year. Rocky expects him to make a decision as soon as next week. He also said it doesn't have anything to do with Smith waiting to see how the QB battle plays out this spring.

Jake Rodrigues has decided to move on from football to pursue a career as a fire fighter like his father. He has a five year old son that he needs to provide for.

Kwayde Miller has a lower back injury and sat out practice. He's expected to miss a week or two of camp. Seems like a precaution deal. Ryan Pope took his place at left tackle and Joe Salcedo was the right tackle. Right guard was Nico Siragusa, center was Arthur Flores and left guard was Antonio Rosales

Departures

Freshman OL Pesi Savea quit the team last week.
Center Austin Maass will not play this spring and intends to graduate this semester.
Same deal with DL/FB Micah Seau, he will graduate this spring.
Same deal with DL Malcolm Jackson.

Injuries

WR Lloyd Mills will sit out the spring and the upcoming season in hopes of earning a medical waiver to play in fall of 2017. Rocky wouldn't specify his injury, just that Mills is "dinged up" from a variety of injuries.
DL Damon Moore will sit out spring. Not sure about his injury
OL Ryan Krum will sit out the spring. I believe he has an ankle/foot issue that he is rehabbing.
DL Dakota Turner will sit out the spring. He had knee surgery last season.

The Haves and Have Nots of College Sports

Dennis Dodd over at CBS Sports submitted a new article on the difference between the Power 5 conferences and those not in the Power 5, and we are the feature of the latter category.
"College teams becoming copycats as gap betweens haves, have-nots widens"
http://www.cbssports.com/collegefoo...widens-college-football-teams-become-copycats

No, this is not an attack, per se, on our institution, rather it is an information article showing the inequity that now exists in D1 college football. Coach Rocky worked with Dodd on this article.

Bobby Hauck

FootballScoop is reporting that former UNLV head coach Bobby Hauck is joining the staff and I'm now hearing the same. He's a defensive guy but his position or title is still unknown as far as I know.

SDSU is still in search for a QB coach as far as I know too.

Congrats Bobby Hauck

Hauck is an exceptional coach and recruiter. Everyone points to his failure at UNLV, but this just says more about what a coaches graveyard Vegas is than what kind of coach BH is. All I need to see is the performance of the Special Teams this year and his history with the Montana Griz (the Griz won or shared seven straight Big Sky Conference championships. He is the fourth coach to guide Montana to a national championship game.[6] He took the 2004 team to the NCAA Division I-AA national championship game and the 2006 team to the I-AA semifinal) I was one who openly lobbied for Hauck to get the SDSU job when it went to Brady and I would do so again if Rocky retired. This guy is a solid asset the our program and I am glad he is being rewarded for his success with ST and recruiting.

LS

Just like at fullback, SDSU is going to have to make a replacement next year at long snapper.

Jeff Overbaugh's replacement will have big shoes to fill but it appears that the staff is targeting Arizona LS Turner Bernard, who also holds offers from Utah and Northwestern.

The other target is Moorpark LS Garrett Frum, who signed with Utah State out of high school but transferred out because he didn't like the area. Frum was actually at SDSU's game on Friday. He was at UCLA's game on Thursday.

More heat coming down on MW...

J Webb hit an apparent three pointer to win at CSU but refs reviewed it and ruled Webb took 1.3-1.4 seconds to get the shot off when there was only .8 seconds left in the game during the inbound. According to this article, ESPN timed it and he got it off in .7 seconds...Coach Euchasty said the refs informed him that they timed it at 1.3-1.4.

Basketball presser

Steve Fisher commented on the recent MW replay debacle and rebounding from the Fresno State loss.

It's worth noting that he mentioned that his team's goal is to get at least one 8-0 run in each half every game. They accomplished that against Fresno State and still lost. For the most part because of turnovers.

He also mentioned the staff should have Shrigley score a layup in a game just to see the ball go through the net. Fisher also hopes he makes a three before he retires.

Also joked "I don't want to play Fresno ever again." But then added that he heard Coach Terry said that was his biggest win at Fresno State and liked that SDSU is now at that level.
