Any basketball updates?

30 days until tip off! I'm starting to get excited for it! Team should be stacked this year.

Was wondering when we'll get any basketball updates. I saw that Kell is preseason all conference, McDaniels preseason freshman of the year, and Gill-Caesar preseason newcomer of the year.

I also saw that Max Hoetzel hurt his knee in practice.

Anything else going on?

Recruits at the SDSU-UNLV game

Three-star Mexia Texas QB Jaylen Gipson, a dual-threat, flew to San Diego this morning and intends to stay this weekend. He'll visit the campus tomorrow and a commitment to SDSU is possible (Horton/Morgan).

Michael Onyemaobi, Cal commit. But he's now been to two games and seems to have legit interest.

-Olympian OL Dominic Gudino. The center now has SDSU as his number one school. He sent out his midseason film just before the game and will wait to see who else offers but the Aztecs are in a good spot. Schmidt has been on him hard.

Helix SS, Arizona commit Scottie Young

I also believe I spotted Cathedral Catholic ATH Jordan Genmark Heath too

Chaffey College WR Marquis Wimberly (related to former Nevada receiver Brandon Wimberly)

Chaffey College RB Robert Hampton

Valley Center DE Micah Wierenga

LA Dorasey CB Marquette Jackson

Bakersfield College WR Derek Vickers.

Bakersfield College RB Solomon Ajayi (relative of Jay)

2018 QB, Heritage Devan Freedland.

Pros/Cons

What went right:

-Offensive play calling. Didn't ask Chapman to do much. Got the ball into the hands of the playmakers. And watched as the blocking dominated a very young UNLV team.

-Nine pass yards. That will help out the passing yards average at the end of the year, combating the other outlier game against Cal. Not that it matters. The performance did make a big statement though. UNLV didn't even get into the redzone.

-QB pressure. While Rocky turned up the heat a little more tonight with the blitzes he called, the defense got into the backfield much quicker than they did in the past three games where the offenses not only picked the blitzes up, but stood up the pass rushers. Snead never had a chance.

-Quest Truxton. Even though he's still a new face, he has been really fun to watch on punt returns and honestly could be a special teams POTY candidate if he starts taking his long returns all the way back for TD’s. He has has come very close a handful of times this season.

-Dropped passes have been an issue as of late but that wasn'the the case today.

What went wrong:

-The number of penalties saw some improvement but there have still been far too many cases where SDSU's offense puts themselves in 3rd & long situations. At least there weren't any personal fouls.

-Na'I'm McGee. Say what you will, but SDSU lost a senior leader. Luckily, they have some depth to work with in the secondary.

-Chapman gave up a fumble for the second straight game. This one was more of a brain fart/bang bang play than anything.

Post any other notables you guys took away from tonight'so game.

Tuesday presser

Rocky Long about to address the media.

Some of the notes on UNLV that stick out:

-While they are a quick hitting passing team, and they have a mobile QB, the Rebs o-line has only given up two sacks this season. That's good for second best in the country. Ohio State and Miami are third.

-They have a top ten rushing offense (273 yards), and have had four different players reach the 100 yard mark in the past two games.

-They have two QBs in Nebraska transfer Johnny Stanton and Dalton Snead. Both are legitimate running threats with good size. Staton was injured prior to the Fresno State win this past weekend so Snead made his first start, throwing 9-for-17 and 135 yards (1 td). Stanton will miss the next month so Snead will be the guy again.

-They give up 400 yards per game on defense and are also one of the most penalized teams in the country,

Ruben or Steve, defense questions

two questions:
First in watching the Cal and SALA
Games was noticing our lbers would start their blitz stunts early and to one side. Offense, Cal threw the opposite side. So. Al moved rb to opposite side and ran where we weren't consistently. Are we telegraphing our blitz punches? I'm watching on TV and know what's coming.
Second: when it's third and 3-5 yds to go, why do our dbs play 7-10 yds off receivers?

OL battle

It sounds like Ryan Pope will be getting a good hard look to replace Antonio Rosales at right guard this week.

While Rosales is a good run blocker, he doesn't always hold up too well on passing plays (especially obvious passing downs). Pope has the size and bulk to play guard and he'll arguably be the team's best pass blocker next year so the move would make a lot of sense.

First practice

Media viewing of the basketball team's first practice just ended. I'll have lots of video up later but my quick hitter impressions:

-Figuring out the starting lineup will be a headache but there will be lots of versatile weapons to use in the rotation.

-Shirgley is no longer the team's only spot up shooter. Ceaser, Hoetzel and Narain can all knock it down

-There was a heavy emphasis on transition offense and defense today. They definitely plan to take advantage of the team's overall athleticsm.

-It's early, but based on pure athleticsm, there will be little drop off in terms of Spencer's rim protection with the addition of Izundu. He's slightly taller than Pope, is cut, can run the floor with a little bounce in his step instead of sloppily like most bigs these days, and his dunk range is insane. Not only does his head nearly hit the rim each time, he has freakish arms that allow him to dunk off two feet despite being a couple feet from the baskey.

-McDaniels is very long and has a ton of potential but based off today he seems like a clear redshirt candidate.
