On the coaching staff... (p2)

I was going to save this until tomorrow but I received more substantial, clear cut info on how the staff search is going and some more clarification. Before I go further though, coaching searches are fluid situations and actual coaching titles/responsibilities will be the last thing finalized during the process. It will all get sorted out eventually.

OK, first off, it sounds like incoming coach Brian White will NOT be the quarterbacks coach. He will likely coach the running backs as he did at Florida during his last coaching gig.

That leaves SDSU with this on offense:

OC- Jeff Horton
QB- Unknown
RB- Brian White
OL- Mike Schmidt
WR- Hernandez Cooper
TE- Grad Asst (or possibly another hire)

Rocky has interviewed QB coaches all week and he's still looking for the right guy. He wants to interview a lot of candidates before he comes to a decision, which means there is a possibility that he can end up hiring somebody who he already interviewed this week. He's moving patiently - he knows how important the job is. QB development is the most important piece to any successful program.

It's not going to be a guy like Jeff Garcia who has zero coaching experience and it's not going to be a guy like George Whitfield who fixes flaws in throwing mechanics and that's it (NFL QBs see him once or twice before the draft). He's looking for a guy with experience and success both in coaching and recruiting.

Rocky is looking all over the place, from the high school ranks, NFL coaches and other college candidates too. I'm sure Jeff Horton will have a say in it too.

So, whoever the hire is, just know that a lot of thought was put into it.

Extra note: Speaking of QBs, there should be some surprise news for me to report as early as next Thursday. That's all I will say about that for now.

Ryan Pope

Long Beach CC OT film from then.

SDSU is the only school that apparently knew that he was a spring qualifier and kept things under wraps, otherwise Pope would be one of the most coveted JuCo tackles on the west coast. Say, for example, he stayed in JuCo for another year and became a mid-year graduate this upcoming December, he'd probably blow up sort of like Kevin Scott.

Mike Schmidt had an in home visit with him last night and basically sealed the deal. He will likely redshirt and fill in for Pearce Slater when he graduates in a year at right tackle. I think he's that good as long as he develops.

Very BIG commitment.

Spoke to Quevedo

Quevedo just got back home from his official visit. Loved hanging out with his host Nico Siragusa and all the fancy food consumed during the weekend (favorite was Tower 23). He roomed with NorCal safety Ron Smith and they talked about SDSU a lot. He said the visit really put San Diego State at the top and they will definitely stick in his top two no matter what happens moving forward, but he wants to take one or two more visits before deciding. He came down to San Diego with his mom and she loved the area. His dad wasn't able to make the trip so Quevedo needs to talk about his recruitment a little more with him. I get the vibe that Quevedo is waiting until his mid-January visit to Boise St. and he will decide after that. It will be interesting too see how the Aztecs o-line recruiting develops until then. Also worth noting that there were two more OL official visitors this weekend. Will have more soon.

Basketball presser

-Fisher very proud of the win at Wyoming.

-"We've had great games with Vegas. We have great respect for one another but when we get out an play we desperately want to win."

-Fisher wary of UNLV coming off tough overtime loss to Boise State. Knows they're going to give it their all and try to avoid very poor start in conference.

-Fisher said Dooling has been big for UNLV but the team still has a lot of inexperienced true frosh playing significant minutes.

-Polee had a stress test according to Fisher, and all went well - they feel good about it - but they're still going through the process.

-Winston adamant about not doing anything differently against UNLV. Attacking the hoop, defending 94 feet.

-Winston says Polee off the court impacts the team in a lot of ways but especially his usefulness at the top of the 1-3-1 zone when the Aztecs execute it.

New Commit??

Looks like SDSU has added some beef along the OL by adding Long Beach CC Offensive Tackle Ryan Pope per JC football. Pope appears to be a freshman qualifier and should have 4 years to play 3 here, giving him the ability to redshirt if needed. Should be here for spring ball.

Couple new offers on defense

I was perusing twitter and looks like the staff offered Seaside HS DE Dariyn Choates and Riverside City College SS/LB Thaddeus Lagrone recently. Choates looks particularly studly and has great getoff, as evidenced by his 17 sacks during his senior year. Lagrone is a great athlete who has LB size and might be able to play Aztec here.

Zylan Cheatham

According to Mark over at the UT, Zylan has been a full on participant in practices. So why hasn't he been cleared to play yet? We need a strong rebounder and another player who can muscle his way inside for a basket. If the staff is going to be overly cautious at this point in the season then they just need to go ahead and red-shirt him now. Otherwise he needs to start playing right now.
