Zach Collins update

Was able to get ahold of Zach's dad, Mike Collins, late last night following his basketball game. It sounds like San Diego State is now a serious player for Zach. He took an unofficial last summer but this visit was completely different and the family feel much more comfortable about the school and coaching staff.

A lot of questions were answered.

-Mike called the visit "unexpectedly, really, really good," because "in the recruiting business, you hear all kinds of things, and it couldn't have been more opposite of what we were led to be believe."

(Gotta' think other schools have really been negative recruiting SDSU for whatever reason.)

-The other schools are Cal, Gonzaga, UNM and Utah. He's already visited Cal and SDSU officially. In two weeks, he'll be up in Utah. After that, he'll go to The Pit for a visit when the Lobos play UNLV (Rebels aren't really in consideration as of now). After that, he'll go visit Gonzaga for his final official. Zags' are considered the favorite. Utah's playing catchup. Cal, UNM and SDSU are right behind.

-Zach has told all the east coast schools on him that he's staying out west. A west coast school can sneak in and get an unnofficial visit but UNM, Utah and Gonzaga will likely get the officials no matter what.

-With the Collins family, there's supposedly no difference between an unofficial and official. They don't care too much for the wining and dining part of trips. There more about building a relationship with the staff and players and taking notes on how Zach will fit into the program's style of play.

Against Utah State, Angelo Chol and Skylar Spencer combined for 5-of-7 from the field, earning 10 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. More importantly, SDSU also got a lot of touches inside to JJ O'Brien and ran the offense through him as usual. If schools have been telling Collins 'San Diego State doesn't use their bigs,' he found out that the staff indeed does on Saturday.

It's also worth noting that the Collins' family understands that Spencer isn't exactly an offensive scoring machine and they know SDSU is known for adjusting their style of play to best suit the players abilities. The Aztecs don't have anyone that's like Zach, but if they did, he would be able to do what he's really good at doing on offense.

Collins' family also really liked the Aztecs pressing defense. At Bishop Gorman, where they also have five-star bigs Chase Jeter and Stephen Zimmerman, Collins sometimes has to play the wing and he helps a lot when the team runs a full court press. Mike said his son had six steals in his game last night, for example.

-Zylan Cheatham was Zach's official host during the trip but he also hung out with the entire team following the game.

(I'm assuming Collins is very aware of Cheatham's recruitment between SDSU and UNM, and I wouldn't be surprised if he asked him why he chose the Aztecs over the Lobos.)

Another note on Cheatham: Mike, who's also coached at a high level for a very long time, said Cheatham has LeBron James-esque athleticism. That's the first time I've heard that comparison.

-SDSU made it clear that they want Collins bad. In 2016, Chol and Spencer will be gone. Collins wouldn't arrive at a more perfect time. "We need him," Mike said Fisher told him.

-Mike on Fisher: "He's the most genuine, big-hearted person we've ever met during this process."

Collins knows that Fisher is year-to-year in terms of retiring despite the three-year contract but they like that there will be continuity with Brian Dutcher whether he leaves or not.

-Zach Collins will decide on a school sometime between March and May. He wants to get his recruitment done early so he can enjoy his senior year and begin receiving coaching (and criticism) from the college staff before he even enrolls in school.

Duke

Duke is favored by 10.

Here is one take on the game:

The burning question is which Aztec offense will show up!!

Game Thread - St John's

I'll have a freelancer outt their in Charlotte covering the game so I'll be watching on TV just like most of you all tonight. I think SDSU's chances tonight are fairly high as long as they get contributions off the bench and own the glass. There's no reason for them not to be able to do that. I'm also interested in seeing who guards D'Angelo Harrison. Either Polee and Quinn make sense, but you gotta think Winston wants to face up with his old teammate as well.

I'm picking SDSU, 55-50.

Wednesday practice notes

Just got back from practice which was probably one of the best days the defense has had all spring. Both first and second team units shut down the defense on first down, redzone and basically every other scenario the coaching staff threw at them during live contact periods.

It got to a point where the defense was chanting "We want Pumphrey!" after forcing the offense to settle for field goals three straight times. On the fourth goal line stop by the defense, Adam Hall (who was acting as ref) called offsides on the defense like five seconds after the play was over with a smile on his face, just to give the offense another try. Rashaad Penny saw a pretty large hole on the next play and could have dove for the TD, but the safeties came up and plugged it pretty quickly and made the stop. It got pretty ridiculous and a lot of fault should be put on the offensive line. Penny and Stamps were pretty average today too but with how the defense looked, it's hard to really tell.

I think the offensive line has done well run blocking for the most part, especially the first unit, but all the units of the o-line haven't given their QBs very much time to go through their progressions. Rocky acknowledged it today and said the pass protection is the biggest concern on offense - not the QBs or WRs, which I completely agree with.

Here are some basic notes I took from practice today:

-First and foremost, I should note that Donald Hageman took a really big shot on a field goal attempt late during practice. I think either McGee or Smith dove to block the kick and it really startled Hageman. Rocky didn't have an update on Hageman but said that he apparently was fine. Hopefully nothing too serious. Darryl Richardson blew his blocking assignment on that play which led to it.

-Probably the biggest collision of spring camp happened right in front of my eyes and on my video camera. Should be some good footage for you all to see. Christian Chapman found Mikah Holder for about a 25 yard streak and as Holder was diving ahead for it, Na'Im McGee came from centerfield to completely wipe out the play - or so I thought. Mikah somehow hung onto the ball, and Chapman ran all the way up the sideline to celebrate with him. I think it could have easily been called for targeting - it was very close - but it just goes to show how physical and imposing the entire defense was today.

-The defensive line and linebacker units are in need of young players ready to step up and I think Noble Hall is getting there. He's making much more tough plays against the run and getting in the backfield more frequently.

-While Jake Rodrigues hasn't proven to be the most talented quarterback, he's one of the best leaders on the team by far. He's more vocal, more excitable and can really command the group. He constantly celebrates with his RBs, WRs and OL during drives and today he showed another side of him. Running back PJ Walker ran into a wall of defenders during one rep and when the whistle was blown, a few players including Arizona transfer Ryan Dunn were still tangled up with Walker and wouldn't let go. Rodrigues came out of nowhere to shove Dunn and then those two went at it a bit. Walker thanked Rodrigues for it and you can tell the entire offense seems to respond well to his leadership.

-Another example I have on Rodrigues is when the offense huddled up for a play, and Rodrigues turned to the sideline to receive the call. I don't know he sent out the call, but Rodrigues confidently said "No, we can't do that," and huddled the offense back up. He again said "we can't do that," toward the sideline, and as it turned out, whoever sent out the play call called a play for a different personnel, one which the offense currently didn't have on the field. I asked Rocky if that was a good sign for a QB, or if it was something every QB should be aware of and expected to correct, and Rocky basically said that it was promising for Rodrigues to recognize what was going on and address it with no hesitation or thought.

I think moments like these are keeping Rodrigues in the running and continue to show that he has a chance to be a special player if he improves his actual arm skills.

-While I say all that, it's worth noting that the offensive unit containing Maxwell Smith and Rashaad Penny was the only group that sustained a long drive and scored against the defense today.

Will have more notes and video up soon.

Monday practice notes

I'm actually about to take my dog out for a much needed walk so I'll post more in about an hour. I just wanted to give you all a heads up that if you go to the spring game, don't expect to see too much of the top QBs during the scrimmage (Smith, Chapman in particular).

Both those guys got most of the reps today and Rocky Long basically admitted those are the two guys they feel more comfortable with, but he also said that part of the reason for them taking most of the reps is because he didn't think the quarterbacks competing for the top three spots were able to get comfortable during practices by only receiving/sharing 15 or so live reps each practice. The plan now is for the quarterbacks to rotate each practice, meaning 2 or 3 QBs got a lot of reps today (nearly double than they usually would), while 2 or 3 other QBs will get more of the reps on Wednesday.

On Saturday during the scrimmage though, Long basically said that he plans to play the QBs he's least confident/comfortable in during the spring game to see how they do.

Anyway, for now, my standout performers today were: Paul Pitts, Mikah Holder, Daniel Brunskill, M Smith, C Chapman, Rashaad Penny, Jay Henderson, Kendrick Mathis, Kameron Kelly and Pierre Romain.

Also of note, Long publicly stated that he has been disappointed with Fred Melifonwu's development this spring. Will have more on this later.

Duke in the Next Round

We'll beat St. John's because we're better with or without their shotblocking center. And I doubt anyone will claim Lavin will prepare his team as wel as Fish.

So that will place us against Duke in our next game and they'll have essentially a home game. Can we beat them? Can we beat a freshmen dominated team at home? Ask Kansas.

Statistically, Duke is the lowest rated 1 seed. Much better offensively than defensively. Their two lead guards are on the court more than JJ. This is a team that can be susceptible to pressure. Depth isn't as valuable in the Big Dance because the commercials are longer and the adrenaline runs stronger. But remember how Skylar frustrated Embiid in Lawrence last year. I like our chances.

If you're going to face a #1 early in the tourney, you want it to be Duke this year. And you want to have a defense oriented, experienced team. That's SDSU. It would be nice if we could score, but that's why we're an 8. We choked away a 6 in the MW final.

Texas trio on campus

Argyle (Tex.) Liberty Christian had three prospects on unofficials today including QB Justus Lee and another kid (I lost his name on my notes but will find out who it was soon).

Apparently the three and their head coach rented a house in mission beach and have been here all day. Tomorrow they will visit UCLA.

Here are Nick Starkel's highlights.

Jeff Horton and Blane Morgan seemed to spend some time with him after practice today. Seems like a good kid. His demeanor and personality remind of Zach Gentry.

It's UNLV

Finally checked into my hotel and saw Nevada players with some down looks on their faces. Apparently Coach David Carter was fired following the game.

Anyway SDSU will get UNLV tomorrow at 6 p.m.. Not sure how much the home court advantage will be in play but considering the rivalry, Rebels fans should show up.

Worth noting Christian Wood has dropped 19 and 28 points in his last two games, albeit against the two worst teams in the conference. The O'Brien-Wood matchup will obviously be the key to the game.
