Jaylen Hands

You heard it here first Jaylen Hands headed to Balboa Prep and not playing for Foothills Christian this year. Also think Deandre Ayten will not be playing college basketball, instead opting to head overseas to play a year professionally before coming back for the draft.

DL

You guys have been asking, and today I confirmed San Diego State signed a Pac-12 bounce back to help out SDSU's front line.

Former four-star and Arizona signee Kyle Kelly can play nose and end for SDSU and may be an immediate contributor depending on how he looks in the fall (along with injured players like Barrett and Heyward needing to stay healthy once they return). A couple Pac-12 school were on him, but he has a total "San Diego personality" so it didn't surprise me that this would be the fit for him.

Check out his clips from Saddleback below (10 sacks last season).

Some standouts

Rocky Long speaking to all the parents at the beginning of camp.

San Diego State held its skills camp Sunday evening and while this is usually a camp with under the radar kids (over 350 total in this year's group) hoping to get exposure and potentially land an offer, there were a couple prospects that at least looked like borderline Div. I level prospects.

As expected, QBs Lucas Johnson of Mt. Carmel Zack Weatherly from Nashville were there. Both have similar builds and they also have comparable throwing motions to an extent. Weatherly definitely seemed like the more accurate thrower from what I saw.

The point of this kind of camp setting though is to find sleepers and potential offer worthy recruits and this is what I was able to find, not knowing who would be in attendance beforehand.

Torrey Pines DL Steven Mason has already received an offer from SDSU and participated in OL/DL drills. He's a legit 6-6 with a build similar to Donavin Buck a few classes back (long arms, broad shoulders). I chatted with him afterward and SDSU is the only school showing strong interest as of now but a bunch of Pac-12 schools are creeping in with letters, calls to his school etc. He's a very raw prospect and definitely a developmental guy that, with added size, should fit Coach Lewis' mold of d-linemen with agility and lateral movement.

El Cajon Valhalla DL Daniel Bender is another definite D-I prospect with another really impressive frame (about 6-3.5 with very broad shoulders and long arms that you'd expect to see on a 6-6 guy) and a high motor. Reminded me of Cody Galea. I talked with him for a bit and plan to talk with him again tomorrow to see if anything happens regarding a SDSU offer. He attended Aztecs hometown hero day and an offer should be close. Already has a Nevada offer.

Two other DL standouts were San Jacinto (Calif.) NT Elijah Chambers and Nuevo (Calif.) Nuview Bridge edge rusher/TE Jay Williams.

Williams, who has visited Fresno, SDSU and UNLV in the past, has a Noble Hall type frame (about 6-4.5, 245) and can move while Chambers is just an absolute load at about 6-1, 265. He's not the typical NT SDSU looks for but the quickness and first step he displayed should at least put himself onto the coaching staff's radar moving forward. On film he's not the best tackler in the backfield but at SDSU, his job wouldn't require much of that anyway.

From what I saw of the OL prospects, Carlsbad OT Zach Thomas and Mililani OL Marcus Mafi both had nice size and athleticism. Mafi's about 6-3, 270 and Smith is about 6-4, 270.

Out of the skill guys, there were a handful of prospects that caught my eye.

Flower Mound (Tex.) safety Chandler Claterbaugh was good in one-on-ones for his size but he held a bit too much for my liking. Long frame but not a quick-twitch guy. He's a borderline Mountain West recruit so he's worth knowing about down the line, but I'm not sure if he's offer worthy by SDSU's standard. Film's worth checking out if I'm on the staff, though.

Green Valley (Nev.) WR Isaiah Maclin was the most physically impressive receiver at just under 6-4, 190 pounds and he made some circus catches in tight coverage. Kind of a stiff runner but has good hands and was never slowed down at the line.

One of the better WR/CB athletes I watched was Bishop Alemany ATH Jarrin Pierce. He's about 5-11, 175 and was one of the top route runners in the group. He gave total effort each rep and grew on me as the day went on. That showed up on his film that I watched once I got home. I then noticed that he already has a Rivals profile so schools on the west coast should be aware of him at this point.

Pierce film.

One of the top agile prospects and probably the best overall WR in the group was Peoria (Ariz.) WR Deyton Jackson, another guy who has a profile already and SDSU has been in communication with. Has really good hips and can stop on a dime. Has some Mikah Holder traits without the top-end speed.

Jackson film.

The best cover corner in the group was Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman 2017 corner Alex Perry, brother of Arizona State signee and former SDSU target Armand Perry. Alex also committed early to ASU so it was surprising to see him at the Aztecs summer camp. His friends/teammates were with him though, which to me seems like he may have just went to the camp to be with his group of friends.

That being said, he was very, very good, like Leon McFadden good, and watching him matchup with Jackson and Pierce were a treat.

Perry film.

JuCo corner Shawn Franklin (6-1, 180) from Arizona Mesa college also showed very impressive athleticism and feet, although he bit on a few double moves that you would expect an older guy to recognize and react to. I can see SDSU looking at him for the warrior position potentially.

Commitment

Late but San Diego State received an offensive line commitment from Kevin Staton, a prospect out in Virginia who I've heard could be a great prospect if he's able to get in better shape. About 6-6, 340 pounds but has the ability to play any position on the OL and has a great mentality too. I think if he improves his foot speed over time, he'll be a solid guard.

Who were the other candidates

Ruben, who were the other candidates that applied for the OC job after Toledo announced his retirement? Were any others interviewed besides Coach Horton? It would be interesting to know which others had interest in the job. I ask only out of curiosity. I, immediately, thought of and hoped for Horton to be the next Aztec OC. We're all very happy with that. I'm sure some out there have wondered as well who else applied.

JC DL Visits

Didn't see anything on this, but looks like the staff is looking to bring in another DL before the season starts. Howard Houston played both ways at Foothill JC last year and graduates in May. He tripped here last weekend and looks to be around 6-foot and 285. Not the biggest guy, but wins with speed, quickness (very good get-off), and power. Think he would be a good pickup at this juncture... especially how perilously thin we are at DL.
