B-Ball Staring Lineup for League play

So I was kind of wondering what everyone thought of this, but I have a feeling that we'll see the original starting lineup, save maybe one position, once MWC play starts. I firmly believe that the experience of Winston and Sky, and even Malik, in playing against familiar foes in hostile environments would be of greater benefit than Chol, Dakarai, and possibly Zylan slugging their way through conference growing pains. I do like Z over Pope if Malik continues to be unproductive, but starting a bunch of "new" minutes in tough venues makes me nervous. We can't afford to come out sloppy or anxious as we don't currently have the offense to get back into games with consistency. I really hope that Winston and Malik can return to form, and Sky can anchor the middle and get us 6-8 garbage points a game plus a few O boards. Kansas should tell us a lot about where we stand, but I can't say I'm overly confident at this point, there is still a lot of uncertainty with this team.

DM

Devaughn Murray was a defensive back I loved when I first saw him at SDSU's camp about three summers ago but when he signed with the Aztecs he never was able to qualify.

He spent this past season at Grossmont college (film: http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1740667/highlights/293884380/v2) and he was expected to play at RCC next year.

Just recently he tweeted that he's a full qualifier which may mean that he can sign with a school in the spring. I still want to check in on him to see what his intentions are and if by 'full qualifier' he means he's a full qualifier that can transfer to a D-I school this spring or after a semester at RCC next fall. Whatever the case, I was told SDSU will continue to pursue him. He's just a crazy athletic prospect not to.

Two commits

JuCo guys Jondarius Gardner (6-4, 285) and Derrick Achayo (6-4, 280) have both committed to San Diego State today. CSU was pursuing Gardner and Achayo, a former ISU commit, held offers from Cincy and Boise.

Gardner has two years two play two seasons while Achayo has three to play two.

Kaelin Himphill

Just spoke with him.

Had a great visit and said the spatters of rain this weekend was nothing compared to Oregon weather so that wasn't an issue. He was hosted by Kyavah Tezino and really liked how both the players and coaches preach mental toughness and how win or lose they are always the toughest and most physcial players on the field. He watched film and loved how Calvin Munson plays and wants to mold himself into a player like that. Arnett also compared him to Munson which was nice.

He also said he's happy with the way SDSU has handled his recruitment, not being a staff pressuring him constantly and letting him take his time.

Moving forward, Himphill will likely visit Arizona for an official soon. Fresno State may also get a visit but since it's not too far away, he may just use an unnofficial visit instead and save the official in his back pocket in case a school farther away jumps into the mix (he mentioned Kansas and Wash St. as close to offering). He's already visited Oregon State and Utah State and said all schools are pretty much even at this point. SDSU will be in it until the end.

CIF

Greg Bell had a big game in a win over Mission Bay with five touchdowns.

Trey Lomax's dad is actually a coach at Bonita Vista. I wonder if he made the trip to the Aztecs game afterward.

Lucas Johnson was injured in a loss to Rancho Bernardo. Don't think it's serious but he was benched afterward. He had a bad pick and took a very long sack but also had some nice passes, including a 90-yard TD.

Commish on bowl w/two MW teams

CSU vs. Nevada...

Statement from Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson

Regarding Football Bowl Game Match-Ups

For the first time in NCAA history, an insufficient number of deserving bowl-eligible teams (i.e., 6-6 record or better) are available to fill all the bowl games which make-up the current landscape (40 bowls plus the National Championship Game). As a result, a specific group of 5-7 teams ranked according to Academic Progress Rate was granted waivers to expand the bowl-eligibility pool and ensure no bowl game would go dark. Today, we have come to the unfortunate realization another dubious milestone has been reached – two teams from the same conference will face each other in a bowl game later this month. Neither of these developments is good for college football.

While the expansion of the pool to provide additional teams was a necessary step at the end of this season to protect the college football bowl partners, and one which the Mountain West supported for at this moment, a conference match-up in a bowl game did not have to happen. The NCAA decision to allow 5-7 teams to be added to the pool on an equal footing with 6-6 teams was flawed. Our Conference representatives argued steadfastly for an approach whereby all 6-6 teams would first be placed according to primary and secondary agreements among the conferences and bowl games. Our position was that only then would the safety net of 5-7 teams be activated for those games which had not yet secured participants – rather than allow those teams to fulfill conference agreements and usurp 6-6 teams from conferences with back-up agreements. The Mountain West cast its vote against the recommendation of the NCAA Football Oversight Committee (which did not include that parameter), and subsequently also voted in opposition to the action of the NCAA Council to approve that recommendation.

Understanding the implications of the NCAA verdict on Monday and with the knowledge neither of the primary or back-up conferences contracted as opponents in one of our bowl games would be able to provide a team, the Mountain West began immediately to work in earnest toward identifying a solution that would place teams in a manner that could avoid a conference match-up in a bowl game. We exchanged dozens of phone calls, texts and e-mails over the course of six days with numerous bowl games, other FBS conferences, the NCAA staff, the Football Bowl Association and our partners at ESPN Events. We spoke individually with our directors of athletics and convened that group collectively on multiple conference calls. We engaged throughout the week with members of the MW Board of Directors.

The Mountain West explored every possibility for placing the teams in question. We suggested swaps, alternative financial arrangements and creative options. Unfortunately, no one was willing to adjust and those efforts were to no avail. Following the outcome of last night’s games, it became clear there were 80 teams for 80 bowl slots and the only two openings still available for a pair of MW teams would match them in the same game.

It is a travesty the Mountain West has been forced into this situation. Clearly, the system is broken. There is an excess of bowl games due in part to a disparate allocation of openings vs. conference bowl histories. The result is teams with sub-.500 records participating in bowl games. There is consensus change is needed and this year’s outcome must not be repeated.

However, that is a discussion for another day. At the moment, we need to focus our attention on the more than 1,000 Mountain West football student-athletes, band members, cheerleaders and others who will be able to enjoy a postseason opportunity in the weeks ahead. We will work diligently with our bowl partners to ensure those young people have the best experience possible.
