Draft deadline

Today marks the draft deadline and I have confirmed that all the juniors considering the NFL are sticking with staying at SDSU for their senior year. There were some concerns about agents/friends/family that may have tried to get in the heads of guys like Kazee and Pumphrey but everyone is staying.

DJ Pumphrey
Damontae Kazee
Calvin Munson
Nico Siragusa
Malik Smith
Na'Im McGee
Alex Barrett

That's a very nice group of senior leaders heading into next year.

SDSU getting another O'Brien from Utah

Souther Utah 6-4 freshman offensive lineman Dominic O'Brien will walk-on to the football team this spring, joining quarterback Jimmy Walker from Cerritos and defensive lineman Michael Peoples from the 2015 class.

newcomers who may make an influence Juwan Washington as a kick returner running back in slotback. Jerry Cheney or Jabril Lewis at wide receiver. Julian Rochelin will be bigger and better next year as well Myles Cheatum.

Reactions: SurfN'Aztec

SDSU-Boise State

SDSU leads 2-0 at the 16:40 mark.

Aztecs came out of the gates shooting 0-for-7 from the field (including ugly attempts by Spencer and Shepard) until Cheatham took on Webb for a nice post drive bucket at the 17:30 mark. Aztecs have also grabbed four offensive boards which is why BSU has only had three attempts.

DBs

I've posted in the past that Dwayne Johnson was considering a Fresno St official visit for this weekend but he has since decided against it (likely to hold his spot).

Trenton Thompson was pretty soft when he committed , saying at the time he would still take officials to Colorado State and Utah State, but he has also decided against it. Instead, he'll visit Wyoming on Jan 29 after his SDSU visit on the 22nd.

If he does end up flipping, that will only add space for Rob Awugnayi, Tayler Hawkins or Keoni Stallworth.

FYI , Parie Dedeaux, Will Stricklin and Kyree Woods all seem like firm DB commits.

Jan. 15 visitors

There are none.

Sorry to lead you guys on but two recruits misinformed me about visiting this week (they are visiting later on). Maybe coincidental. Not sure. Any way, it looks like this year's recruiting strategy is to spend this week doing home visits with the committed prospects (like Lucas Johnson) and visitors set for next weekend (Jan. 22).

Now that it looks this way it means that SDSU will host up to 25 (!!!) visitors next weekend (mostly commits):

Lucas Johnson
Chase Jasmin
Parie Dedeaux
Tim Wilson
Isaiah Macklin
Parker Houston
Kyle Spalding
Kevin Staton
Yasir Durant
Keith Ismael
Donnell Greene
Douglas Tucker
Semisi Fakesiieki
Forrest Hanlon
Zach Thomas
Will Stricklin
Dwayne Johnson
Kyree Woods

There's about four more guys that I'm aware of (will be able to share names later) but like I said it sounds like the final group will be in the 25 range. Since it's that big, you'll be able to spot the group with the coaching staff during the first half of the basketball game next weekend at Viejas. It will be like a class reunion.

What Does Spanos Do Now?

  • Dean Spanos gets "Rammed", swallows pride and shacks up with Stan Kroenke.

  • Dean Spanos swallows pride and reopens talks with the Mayor's office.

  • Dean Spanos "Stuck in San Diego" looks to go it alone and explores citizen initiative options.

  • Don't care, Spanos is a weasel and the city inept.

So, what do you guys/gals think Spanos is going to do? Play second fiddle to Kroenke, with Stan lording over him in Inglewood? Come groveling back to the Mayor's office to salvage the bridge burned by him and Fabiani? Pursue some kind of citizens initiative (Briggs or other...) for a downtown stadium?

As much as I was looking forward to some finality with this whole fiasco, the NFL owners did San Diegans NO favor with tonight's ambiguous decision that left so many possibilities on the table.

No matter the decision of Dean Spanos, these are interesting times for Aztec football with a lot of changes coming down the road. Excited, hopeful, sad, angry and frustrated all at the same time.

sdsu v Boise recruting

Is the lure of a potential visit to Boise signals to you Ruben, that the recruit will automatically switch to Boise. Particularily you have written off Ishmeal (SP) as a potential Aztec signee going to drop SDSU with no other considerations such as SDS better academic ratings.

Thanks for your thouhts!!
