Dru Mathis

Spoke with Ventura (Calif.) Buena high linebacker Reese "Dru" Mathis. He's a 6-3, 215-pound prospect who, to me, looks like a bigger version of Carlsbad LB Jordan Perez - the kid from last year's class who committed to Stanford. Very quick and tough when engaged in blocks, can play ILB or be an edge rusher (stand up or hand in dirt).

Mathis, the younger brother of SDSU safety Kendrick Mathis, is now up to six offers with Colorado and Fresno State being the most recent.

SDSU recruiting coordinator Tony White offered him first, then Mathis received an offer from UNLV a few weeks ago when he visited the campus after a 7on7 tournament in the area. Nevada and New Mexico offered next. Syracuse is close to offering but they want to see if he's genuinely interested in going to school on the east coast, which he is. The Orange told him they will likely offer if he visits, but financial reasons make that difficult for him. Duke and Washington are also showing interest.

Surprisingly, Mathis has yet to unofficially visit SDSU. He's been to some Aztec games to watch his brother and he also attended the spring game last month. He spoke with LBs coach Zach Arnett and OC Jeff Horton following the spring game and the entire staff thinks he can be a special player.

Expect him to visit San Diego this summer, but for the most part, it's looking like he doesn't plan on spending money for out of state unofficial visits and will wait for his senior year to arrive so he can take (paid) official trips.

Dakarai Allen

I think it's only natural for all of us to be excited about the prospect of a fifth year senior joining the Aztec basketball program.

However, I think we should bear in mind that whoever is brought in must be a better fit in the regular rotation than Dakarai Allen. He's very possibly our best defensive player, period. Think back to what he did to shut down Rashad Vaughn in a game UNLV was on its way to winning at Viejas. He makes silly turnover mistakes and is very hard on himself ... both flaws that would probably be cured with greater playing time and improved confidence. He's a work in progress at the offensive end, but his shot is dramatically improved from when he first joined us, and he's clearly unafraid to go to the hole. His arms are extremely long, and he rebounds like a player three inches taller. He NEVER lets up (Winston, are you reading this?) He was a Top 75ish prospect out of a very strong HS program in Sacramento. He understands our system and has earned his minutes.

Dakarai belongs in the Top 8 next year, and I believe the coaching staff will extend that opportunity to him.

Just to express a little heresy, I personally think he is every bit as good of a fit in our system as Winston. Shepard's decision to stick around was a non-moment for me, because Dakarai has a far more team-oriented approach, and with Malik the likely star, we need less of what Winston sometimes delivers than what Dakarai brings every game.

The more critical decision for our program is whether Dakarai transfers, not whether Winston goes to Europe this year or next.

Keith Smith Question

Hi Everyone, First time poster here. I have been wondering for a little while, but it came to light a little more today, how solid is Keith Smith to SDSU?

I have noticed that he hasn't really mentioned anything regarding SDSU since the day he committed. You would think playing in the tourney he would have some mention of sdsu, similar to Hemsley and Jones; however there is nothing from him, though he retweeted something about Oregon winning.

May be reading into it to much, but was wondering if Ruben or anyone else has any thoughts or info?

I realize we still have a lot of time in his recruiting process, but in basketball I think more often than not guys stick with schools they commit to unlike football, though I know there are always exceptions.

Thanks

Watson talks offer

Jabari Watson is another Ground Zero kid SDSU has known about and he's very familiar with the program. Kind of reminds me of Jordan Thomas in terms of being well spoken and having a business-like personality.

Built more to play inside in SDSU's defense but can handle any of the three spots. Very quick feet in open space so it's not a surprise that some schools are even considering him as a linebacker.

Grad Asst. Coach, Dorian Keller, Gone

Footballscoop.com has reported that the grad assistant is now at Cal Poly.

"Cal Poly: Head coach Tim Walsh has announced the addition of three coaches in Terrence Brown (assistant secondary), Dorian Keller (TEs), and James Emma (assistant LBs). Brown was a corner at Stanford from 2009-2012, Keller is a former University of San Diego wide receiver, and Emma spent the last two years as an assistant defensive line coach at Cal Lutheran."

Ruben, the O-line?

I'm still a bit curious about the status of Darrel Greene. I just can't quite come to grips yet, with a
starting guard from last yrs squad losing out to a converted TE. Also, is the starting center position
pretty much settled in your opinion, with Flores the #1?
I think Rocky had said only two OL positions are solid but do you think we're closer to a starting unit
coming out of spring ball than we think?
Thanx

Zimmerman

At some point, you think that Rice is gonna pull his head out his you know what, right? Of course people will bash him, but he sure gets high end players. I guess they think UNLV is a better path to the NBA, while most athlete-students don't really care to their bone about NCAA games.

Walk-on

Found out last night that Carmichael (Calif.) Jesuit WR/CB Khari Carter plans to walk-on at San Diego State this fall. Film here.

Carter is a teammate of SDSU 2015 signee Isaac Lessard, who I heard may grayshirt and enroll during the spring. Don't know if that's finalized yet but he's a candidate from what I know.

McWilliams

Confirmed San Marcos WR Johnny McWilliams has received an offer to play football at San Diego State. His future likely still lies in basketball but there are a couple intriguing scenarios that could happen if he does end up at SDSU (which would be more likely if the basketball staff offered him).
