Dru Mathis
Spoke with Ventura (Calif.) Buena high linebacker Reese "Dru" Mathis. He's a 6-3, 215-pound prospect who, to me, looks like a bigger version of Carlsbad LB Jordan Perez - the kid from last year's class who committed to Stanford. Very quick and tough when engaged in blocks, can play ILB or be an edge rusher (stand up or hand in dirt).
Mathis, the younger brother of SDSU safety Kendrick Mathis, is now up to six offers with Colorado and Fresno State being the most recent.
SDSU recruiting coordinator Tony White offered him first, then Mathis received an offer from UNLV a few weeks ago when he visited the campus after a 7on7 tournament in the area. Nevada and New Mexico offered next. Syracuse is close to offering but they want to see if he's genuinely interested in going to school on the east coast, which he is. The Orange told him they will likely offer if he visits, but financial reasons make that difficult for him. Duke and Washington are also showing interest.
Surprisingly, Mathis has yet to unofficially visit SDSU. He's been to some Aztec games to watch his brother and he also attended the spring game last month. He spoke with LBs coach Zach Arnett and OC Jeff Horton following the spring game and the entire staff thinks he can be a special player.
Expect him to visit San Diego this summer, but for the most part, it's looking like he doesn't plan on spending money for out of state unofficial visits and will wait for his senior year to arrive so he can take (paid) official trips.
