Blue Shirts?

Ruben, any guy's blue shirting this camp?

I first starting hearing this term a few years ago and haven't seen it mentioned here to my knowledge.
Here's my basic understanding of it for those who haven't heard of this ( I just learned this myself not too long ago )

A blue shirt is sort of like a combination of a greyshirt and a walk on.
He has to never of had an official visit and along w/ not signing a financial aid agreement he has to pay his own way his first fall, like a walk on. However, he's been promised a scholarship his first fall sometime between fall camp and the season. When awarded, like a greyshirt, the scholarship is actually taken from the next upcoming recruiting cycle however the player can play immediately his first fall. Very interesting stuff.

It's how Tennessee signed about 34 players this past Feb and how USC got two 4 star players to give up their scholarships so SC could sign 2 additional recruits.

The key is that player has to pay his own way the first fall. That'd be tough to do at a private school like USC but at a state school like us, it'd be much easier financially. In our situation, we need to take advantage of all our options and this could be a huge tool for us imo. How often do solid players who we go after get delusions of grandeur and hold off on mid-major offers hoping for the USC's of the world to offer only to find out too late that they're not getting one and by then solid schools like us have filled our spots? With blue shirting, we could still get them.

Nolan Narain

Hey Ruben,
Is there any update on Nolan and whether or not he's reclassifying to 2015 or staying in the 2016 class?
I'd heard early on that he was strongly looking to come in early and red shirt as a freshman due to Skylar & Angelo being seniors and getting good minutes, but wasn't sure if there was an update as of now?

Practice notes Day 1

Practice started earlier than expected so I technically missed the opening portion of practice but there was still some takeaways from today.

Upbeat practice. No pads and no hitting means not too much exciting stuff happened so we’ll have to wait at least until next week for that.

We did, however, get to see a lot of reps from DJ Pumphrey and he looked just as smooth as you’d expect, both running and catching the ball. These next few practices will likely be the only time all fall we get to see DJ get reps and make plays (since there’s no contact). Out of the little reps the other running backs received, our observations: Chase Price was solid and healthy as ever. Rashaad Penny added a lot of weight and is now around 205-ish. Marcus Stamps is also bigger and nearing 220-ish. He didn’t get many reps but Juwan Washington, physically, looks more like Chase Price than I previously imagined. He’s obviously a shorter guy but he’s been in the weight room and is up to 188-pounds. Definitely get the feeling that he’s taking the idea of potentially playing as a freshman seriously based on the weight he’s put on (there's just so many guys in front of him right now). Want to see all these guys get reps next week.

At QB, none of them stood out much today. Chapman especially could have been better but none of them really separated themselves. (I think it was like every first day of camp - some guys come out guns ablazing, some guys need a few practices to get back to full speed.)I’ll come back here and edit my post once I rewatch the clips I shot, but I will say the completion rate today was decent.

At wide receiver, Lloyd Mills (who now wears No. 11) and Jabril Clewis look to be serious contenders for playing time. I’d say Clewis is now about 98 percent healthy. There’s still more I’d like to see from him but his overall receiver skills improve every time I see him. Worth noting Jemond Hazely did indeed change his No. to 4. Again, I’ll post more observations of the WRs once I rewatch the clips I took.

At tight end, it was pretty much the same deal you guys are used to reading about. Darryl Richardson is the best tight end after the catch, Daniel Brunskill is the best blocker with rapidly improving pass catching skills, and David Wells is a combination of the two - most solid overall at the position.

On the offensive line, you guys should be very excited about Will Tui. He was fantastic in one on ones. Along with his size and strength, his coordination and balance makes him look like a bigger Darrell Greene but as a freshman. Very good bend and flexibility too. I know it’s a long shot that he plays (or starts) this year, but if something were to happen, it’s very possible he can take over at right guard. He was the most impressive freshman I saw by far. Got some good clips of him too, you guys will see.

Rocky said the staff appealed to the NCAA to let LT Ryan Pope play this season but it was denied. Either way, I thought he looked good and has closed the gap between him and Kwayde Miller. Miller had a couple reps where he just got burned to the edge by speed guys like Alex Barrett (who looked very lean and good by the way). I think he’ll be fine once he gets back into the rhythm of things, like I mentioned earlier.

1st team o-line: Kwayde Miller, Nico Siragusa, Arthur Flores, Robert Craighead and Pearce Slater.

2nd team o-line: Ryan Pope, Antonio Rosales, Austin Maass, Will Tui, Joe Salcedo.

Robert Craighead added a lot of weight. He looks more like a lineman, not only because of his added size, but also because he is no No. 53 (was No. 94). Freshmen Daishawn Dixon and Pesi Savea were both watching practice in crutches. Both physically look pretty good and lean but are more around 6-foot-4 than their listed heights.

On the defensive line, like I mentioned earlier, Barrett looked very impressive at end. He’s always had a great get off and now he really gets to show it on the edge. Jordan Watson and Malcolm Jackson are easily the biggest linemen of the bunch, with Heyward being the more stout guy. Jon Sanchez has a little bit more quickness to him that I don't remember him having. I also think Julian Rochelin is slowly closing the gap on Dakota Turner. Turner is a solid d-end but he's not quite quick enough or strong enough to really be a starter-caliber pass rusher just yet (again, just based off the first day of practice) but I think he'll eventually get there, while Rochelin has a least one of those two necessary qualities with his quickness/athleticism.

At linebacker, it’s worth noting that Randy Ricks will start off at stand-up end. Both he and Austin Wyatt-Thayer are very long and athletic and should be contributors at some point this year. Also, Reggie Murphy is starting out at middle linebacker.

Out of the other newbies, Isaac Lessard is the bulkiest of the freshman, but definitely not as loose or as athletic as Lakalaka or Tezino. I thought Lakalaka was a little sloppy-footed but his quickness and reactions make me believe he will at least be a solid special team contributor (as soon as this season). As for Tezino, to switch things up, I was really impressed with his attentiveness during practice. He always focused in on what the coaches were telling him and hardly made any mistakes. Physically, he’s just about 6-foot-tall and bulky but he’s not stiff at all and runs very well. Very excited to see what he does with the pads on.

Fely's another guy you gotta see with pads on so today he didn't stand out much and still looked a little stiff.

Also worth noting that Jay Henderson has added a lot more muscle but still looks lean and loose in space. Could definitely see him beating out everyone else for the third LB spot.

At safety, LB Devante Davis is now backing up Na’Im McGee at the Aztec position, mostly for depth reasons. Malik Smith and Trey Lomax are still the starting warriors and I doubt anybody leaps them this fall. Smith in particular keeps getting bigger each time I see him and he’s a legit 190 now.

The second unit was Kendrick Mathis, Davis and Kameron Kelly.

Out of the freshman, Jeff Clay really impressed me with his speed and acceleration. I really think he could end up being the next Nat Berhe depending on how his man coverage skills improve moving forward (which is the huge difference between the two). Just a great athlete. Next to him were Ron smith and Parker Baldwin. Baldwin looks like another Lomax while Smith’s range and reactions are really impressive.

At corner, Dwayne Parchment is actually starting off with Tony White’s group, which makes sense considering how physical he is and that’s what SDSU looks for at CB. Damontae Kazee didn’t have his best day, Whittaker was his usual self and I thought Babiash and Romain made some nice plays on the ball.

Still a lot of stuff I need to go through (player/coach interviews and video) but will update this thread with everything from the first practice.

Unis

Just got word SDSU is holding a press conference on Tuesday (tomorrow) around 11:30 AM.

"Rocky Long and select players will preview season and San Diego State’s new home and away football uniforms will be on display. SDSU football student-athletes report on Wednesday (Aug. 5) and the first day of practice is scheduled for Thursday (Aug. 6). A complete fall camp schedule with media availability will be provided at the news conference."

The wait is almost over.

Tuesday presser notes

-Maxwell Smith and Christian Chapman are the top two heading into fall camp.

-Long high on Smith's size, maturity, accuracy and touch. Long high on Chapman's quick release and accuracy. Still inexperienced and only 6-foot tall.

On USD game: "Mostly scheduling issues but I hope the community embraces the game."

-"Strongest position on our team is running back."

-Long on the unis: "Uniforms don't matter to me. I just wear black on black with a black helmet and let's go."

-Long confident in DBs and plans to use more complex disguises this season w/their experience.

Monday

Along with SDSU being a top contender and possible commitment spot for Liam Ryan, who is visiting today, another prospect to keep a close eye on is Kyle Spalding from McKinleyville high school. He's a 6-6, 245-pound prospect who plays quarterback and tight end.

Spalding threw for over 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns last season (against 12 INTs) at a 63 percent completion rate. Nevada and Humboldt St. have also offered.

Check out his film below.

SDSU Academics

Attended an event at SDSU and learned impressive stats about how SDSU continues to climb the ladder academically. Can't find this info online but posting what I heard in person from the leadership:

SDSU received over 83,000 applicants for this school year and the acceptance rate was about 9%. Average GPA was over 3.7. All three stats were new records, something SDSU has done for many consecutive years now.

We discuss the new highs the sports programs are achieving overall but I'm certain the trends above go a long ways towards helping athletic recruiting as well.

Liam Ryan

La Verne (Calif.) Damien offensive tackle Liam Ryan is a prospect that I know a lot of you guys would probably like based on his film and if San Diego State offers during the next couple of days/weeks I can easily see him committing. SJSU and SDSU are his top two as of now with SDSU being the favorite. He has an uncle that played football for the Spartans but he also has an aunt that graduated from SDSU. Ryan also has a bunch of family living in Chula Vista so he's been in the area a lot.

Not only that, but he is teammates with Jeremy Hemsley and he's been on campus a bunch of times with him (for games/last year's summer tournament).

The Pac-12 hasn't been on him much and it's frustrating him enough that he's not even very willing to attend any of their summer camps (although it's a possibility). His plan is to camp at Boise State on Saturday and if they offer, they'll be the favorite, so it'll be interesting to see if SDSU decides to offer in the next couple of days.

Film.

Alex Hobbs

From our Texas Hoops site, San Diego State is pursuing three-star La Porte (Tex.) 6-4 combo guard Alex Hobbs.

The schools pursuing Hobbs the hardest are Kansas St, Boise St, Baylor, Oklahoma, Houston, Creighton, San Diego State and Butler.

Hobbs is a very versatile and steady player
Texas PRO's shooting guard Alex Hobbs (La Porte) hit the court and played solidly throughout the tourney helping his team to a GASO championship. At 6-foot-3, Hobbs plays with a poker face and has a high ceiling with his soft three-point stroke and ball handling that helps with taking care of the ball through pressure. Hobbs held offers from Kansas State, Boise State, Duquesne, Northeastern, Houston, Rice, Butler, Fresno State and Western Kentucky. Now you can add Baylor,Oklahoma, and VCU. - See more at: https://sandiegostate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1784377

Alex Hobbs -- His teammate Jarrett Allen provides the star power for Texas Pro, but Hobbs provides a steady hand on both ends of the floor and is a leader. He hit deep shots, defended well and seemed to come up with the right basketball play over and over again. The three-star prospect is a really solid player. - See more at: https://sandiegostate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1784506#sthash.qonRsd1Q.dpuf

Media Day notes

-Rocky Long just got tested for the first time during his sitting with the media. Asked about if he's dissapointed to not play Boise State during the season, then about his comments following the Boise game last season ("blue mystique"), Long stood by his comments.

"Look at the last four games we played. You tell me if there's a mystique? There's no mystique."

-Long says Jake Fely is 100 percent and ready to go next Wednesday (first practice). Hopes he stays healthy.

-Nick Bawden will play FB.

-Rocky said the offense will install more of it's passing game during the fall compared to the spring.

Basketball staff on Sunday

The Aztecs had Justin Hutson and Brian Dutcher at the Double Pump Best of Summer tournament in Anaheim yesterday to watch De'Anthony Melton.

As I noted a day or two ago, Fisher and Hutson were on hand for Melton's games on Friday and Saturday. Cal Supreme won the 17U Open Division championship at the tournament and Melton played brilliantly. He was knocking down 3-pointers (probably the biggest weakness in his game) and was defending at a high level.

He has the look and feel of a San Diego State player.
