As camp goes on Christian Chapman continues to be widening the gap between him and the backup QBs. He doesn't miss on any gimme throws like he did every now and then earlier in his career and he has been putting the ball on the money more often than not.
I think some people are really underestimating how good the passing game could be this year and on if the OL stays healthy. The next two years will be as strong as we've seen in some time at SDSU.
Chris Laviano is sort of edging out Ryan Agnew a bit now for the No. 2 job in my opinion, but that's mainly because Agnew's level of play drops when SDSU goes into 11v11 full speed periods. He's not as accurate or as confident in the pocket when there's pressure coming around him. As good as he's looked during some 7v7 periods, that improvement has transitioned all that much to the 11v11s.
If a game were today, I'd put Laviano in front of him because of that.
As for the freshman: It's impossible to evaluate QBs at this stage other than there athletic attributes but Mark Salazar and Cam Roane still have a long way to go.
Mikah Holder once again showed off some of the best hands on the team on his first day back. He's able to make catches that no other receiver can consistently make when faced with good coverage. He especially looked good on shorter, quicker routes which is exactly what SDSU needs.
Alex Wilson has consistently played well. The walkon is still mostly a threat just because of his size but he's continued to make catches every time I catch his reps.
Tariq Thompson had a really good practice. I'd still be a little surprised if he played as a freshman but I can see it happening. He seems like the type of player that ends of being a favorite for Rocky.
Will Stricklin is in the same boat^.
Quest Truxton didn't have his best day, struggling to get open and dropping some easy catches. He couldn't get anything on Ron Smith during one on ones either. I don't think it's a coincidence that his worst practice came after he sat out one practice last week with a hamstring strain. I wouldn't be surprised if he sits out again today with hamstring issue
He did have a lucky grab on Kyree Woods toward the end of practice during 11v11s though. It was a deep play down the sideline and Woods was able to deflect the ball into the air. Truxton fell on his own back and the ball fell straight down to his chest for the catch.
Of the WR group, Isiah Macklin is still not in the top tier of receivers in my opinion. The top four guys along with Isaiah Richardson are the ones I'm feeling pretty confident in heading into the season. Richardson has an even better chance to make the travel squad now that Fred Trevillion and Tim Wilson are out with chickenpox. I want to see him face some of the first-string DBs soon.
One thing on him is that I still don't have a great feel on what he can do after the catch, but that will come in time.
Like I mentioned yesterday LB Troy Cassidy was in with the first team over :B Kyava Tezino. Their skill level is pretty similar as pass rushers but the easiest way to decipher them is that Tezino's better against the run and Cassidy's more comfortable playing in space in coverage.
Daishawn Dixon definitely still needs more experience against SDSU's blitzes but he's just so big that it sometimes doesn't matter. There was a play where he had his eyes set on DE Damon Moore in front of him but Moore ended up dropping back into coverage. Out of nowhere came Myles Cheatum on a stunt, trying to launch himself into Dixon who was caught off balance. But all Dixon had to do was lower his shoulder to absorb the impact and he managed to keep in front of Cheatum and maintain the block. I guess bigger is better.
Since Garrison Young has been playing some right guard I think he needs to improve his eyes and blocking more, especially with downfield blocking more (if he's going to be asked to pull). He's been very solid during pass blocking drills but there's still a lot of areas of improvement, not to mention he needs to get bigger.
Dominic Gudino had one of his best practices so far and I'm not just saying that because he took first team reps in place of Rosales. He looked much better and more confident compared to his first week of camp and there was definitely a difference in his reps.
Tyler Roemer coasts a little too much in practice at times but I feel like he's going to turn his level up a notch once the actual season comes. One way to look at that is we haven't really seen the best of him, which is a scary thought.
Myles Cheatum took some reps lining up at nose tackle yesterday, both during one on ones and 11v11s.
Zach Thomas took a few reps at tackle and at center. Douglas Tucker took some reps at right guard and right tackle but it was a little better at guard, even though he's built more like a tackle. And Joe Salcedo took some reps at left tackle. He looked just OK.
There was one small shoving match yesterday during 1v1s. Damon Moore tried to beat Tyler Roemer with a speed rush on the outside but Roemer ended up flattening him. Moore didn't like how slowly Roemer got off of him (it really wasn't slow at all) and shoved him off.
Noble Hall came in to defend Moore by shoving away Derrick Achayo. There was really nothing much to it other than Hall trying to stand up for his group. Practice continued.
DE Chibu Onyeukwu was out at practice with the d-line unit but he didn't take any reps. It appears to be a knee strain.
The starting five of Roemer, Dixon, Ismael, Rosales and Pope is looking more and more secure by the minute because nobody is really showing that they are capable of taking over those spots.
Second team OL:
Achayo, Thomas, Young, Tucker, Salcedo
Third team OL:
Achayo, Young, Thomas, C Martinez/L Bagayoko, Bessent
I think the starting group will stay the same but there will be a lot of positional movement with the backups and reserves this week.
