WR

Rocky singled out Christian Cumberlander as the best blocking WR on the roster.

Also said Pitts, Favreau and Holder have been the best/ most consistent WRs during camp, in his opinion.

FYI practices are closed from here on out. So that means no fans at practices. Media only gets to watch the first 15 minutes, which for the most part is warm-ups. Just a heads up.

Grades for each unit in the Scrimmage

I live in north bay area and couldn't attend the scrimmage. I also live in an area without home internet availability. So I have to use my phone as my mobile hotspot. Thus, I can't watch much video or I will have a several hundred dollar/month cell bill. How about those who attended and are somewhat knowledgeable of the game, give letter grades to the first units:
OL, WR, TE, RB, QB, DL, LBs, CBs, Safeties, Special teams
Feel free to add your comments as well.

Thanks!

Practice notes Day 7

Practice started very early today which meant I missed a lot but did get to see the scrimmage periods.

The team was in full pads and did full contact and the scrimmaging was much more physical this time around.

Walk-on Luke Bussey for example, is a smaller guy but really had some great hits today. Danny Gonzales was really challenging him to play smarter today, too, as he also moved up the detph chart to play alongside Jeff Clay and Ron Smith (Bussey took over Baldwin’s spot). Jake Fely, Malik Smith, Damontae Kazee and Noble Hall all had some really loud stops.

Overall I’d say this was one of the team’s best overall practices.

-QBs did well, hardly any interceptions today other than Chapman throwing a duck off his back foot. Jake Rodrigues showed more patience today, like rolling out while keeping his head up field, finding Mikah Holder on the opposite side for a completion and decent gain. He was a little too patient though on a rollout later in the scrimmage, shying away from making a tough pace to the nearside TE or WR and just running about of bounds into traffic. That’s where he pulled his hammy. We’ll see tomorrow if it’s serious.

As mentioned, JJ Whittaker didn’t play today so Pierre Romain took reps in his spot and also remained on the field with his usual second unit, giving him some extra reps. I thought he did well with the first team. Kept guys in front of him and didn’t take any gambles; made the right play.

Pearce Slater didn’t play so Joe Salcedo moved up the depth chart.

The lines looked like this:

Salcedo, Craighead, Flores, Siragusa and Miller

Servatius, Tuihalamaka, Maass, Rosales and Pope.

Krum, Greene, Phillips, Wofford and Sevatius.

-It’s worth noting that Rocky publicly said for the first time that Arthur Flores is “above the others” at center. Austin Maass looks to be the backup center. And Sergio Phillips today actually did more at right guard than he did at center. I think the staff just really wants him to be capable at both spots in case one of the top guys go down.

Will Tui got a lot of reps on the second team today (for the first time it seemed like over Greene) and he also was supposed to go in with first team during one drive but he wasn’t paying attention on the sideline. Craighead ended up going back on the field in his place.

On the d-line, here were some of the combos that I saw today during the scrimmage.

Sanchez Heyward Barrett

Watson Noble Turner

Kelly Watson Turner

Kelly Jackson Rochelin

Cheathum Jackson Rochelin

- I still expect Noble Hall to surprise fans this year. He’s been doing very well against the run and also had a nice swat on 3rd down to end the drive.

I think I saw Jordan Watson leave practice early near the end but I’m not sure what was going on. Will check to see if it was an injury tomorrow because Rocky and the other coaches didn’t notice it.

-At linebacker, Fely again stood out and made some stops against the run in the backfield just after the running back received the hand off. He’s just incredible at reading run plays, NFL level football IQ.

-At safety Malik Smith has had more of a quiet confidence about himself this fall but he’s still playing at a high level. There’s more maturity to his game on the field and I hardly see Gonzales getting on him for making mistakes, mostly because they don’t happen nearly as often. He’s also more correct on the chances that he’s been known to take against play action.

-Kameron Kelly had an easy pick on a bad duck by Chapman today. Kelly’s return was really impressive though, sprinting across the field and nearly taking it all the way back.

-Rocky said that if Na’Im McGee gets hurt, Trey Lomax would take over at Aztec and either Kelly or Kendrick Mathis would have to take Lomax’s spot. That’s a difficult choice but Kelly has been one of the better playmaker so far in camp.

-I haven’t talked much about David Wells but today was one of his better practices. Much more physical as a run blocker and has made strong catches during the past two practices against one or multiple defenders guarding him close.

-One of the surprise plays of the day was Nick Bawden taking a quick handoff and putting together a nice 25 yard run, breaking at least three (pretty weak) tackles on the way there. He’s still very upright as runner but moved really well in that instance.

-The first and second team offenses really ran the ball well. Penny is starting to have more productive carries than Price as of late and Washington is continuing his promising play.

This is a bit of a stretch but Penny’s starting to look like Jay Ajayi when he runs. He’s much stronger and still somehow looks light on his feet. Had a couple 10-20 yard runs during the scrimmage and also showed some nice moves after catching a pass over the middle for about 15-20 yards. It was called back because of an illegal block by Bawden though. Coach Horton actually got really heated about that.

Washington ran past everyone down the sideline for another 40-yard+ touchdown run (against the second team defense) and had another nice run later on for about 20 yards (against the third team). That put the offense in the red zone and Washington was able to get it in on a goal line run up the middle.

-Dakota Gordon also had a tough 15-20 yard carry up the middle.

-At wide receiver, Eric Judge and Favreau were with the ones.

-Mikah Holder and Lloyd Mills were with the twos. They all have great skillsets to work with but Mills and Holder, especially Holder, can really make guys miss in the open field.

Desean Holmes

On Desean Holmes...

All his academic paperwork is in to the NCAA. Very strong chance he"s in school next week depending on when the NCAA makes their ruling. He has 14 days after school begins before the add/drop deadline to get to campus. Very good sign of progress.

Long said the "NCAA moves at their own pace except they know it's critical for a kid to get in school."

Last practice

Today was the last practice of fall camp (unless you count the public scrimmage on Saturday) and sadly, I don't have much to report as it was more of a walk-through light practice to "freshen them up" for the scrimmage. There are a couple things though:

-DJ Pumphrey, Christian Heyward and Sam Tai won't play in the scrimmage - Marcus Stamps is unlikely.

-JJ Whittaker, Jake Fely, Calvin Munson and Chase Price won't play much either.

-The QBs will alternate with both the first and second OL units.

-Rocky said today Chase is the No. 2 back. Penny and Washington will get the bulk of the carries on Saturday.

-Long said he hopes Heyward will be able to return by the Monday of game week (vs. USD), which means he won't practice for a little over one week.

-Nick Bawden, who was working out with Adam Hall yesterday and again today has a high ankle sprain but it doesn't look too serious. It's more wear and tear from the fullback position. He could potentially play in the scrimmage but I doubt it.

-TE Darryl Richardson has healed pretty quickly since returning and looked really comfortable out there today. I haven't seen him making plays for at least a week in practice now but I wouldn't be surprised if he makes some plays on Saturday.

-Chatted Coach Schmidt today and he made it pretty clear that the starting five is set: Miller, Siragusa, Flores, Craighead and Slater.

-Flores' snaps and QB exchanges at center have been brought up on this board before and he did have two noticeably off target snaps. Schmidt said they're putting more of an emphasis on it as of late, though.

-An interesting tidbit that was brought up is that SDSU and USD coaches are legally allowed to attend the opposing team's public scrimmage but neither will likely do so.

"The ethics of the situation is we won't go to theirs and they won't go to ours.... I have total confidence that - they're old school, we're old school - they're not going to do anything like that."

-Rocky and the staff has watched every USD game from last season.

QBs speak up (videos still uploading)

For whatever reason, the videos of Maxwell Smith and Christian Chapman weren't uploading to youtube yesterday. I it tried again this morning and it failed. I'm 99 percent sure I figured out the problem and I'm uploading them now. The two videos won't be processed for maybe another hour, but below is where they will show up (I'm heading out to practice right now and can't come back until around noon).

Christian Heyward

Christian Heyward went down yesterday in practice .

Out 2-4 weeks. Nothing serious. Has swelling and soreness. No structural damage. No operation needed. Rocky said he should be "dramatically" ready by Tuesday to start running again.
Today he mainly walked/limped around with a wrap around his knee and lower leg. No brace. My guess is he returns in time for USD but it will be a coach's decision on whether or not they should actually play him.

Practice notes Day 12

Will keep this post short once again. First things first, Chapman and Smith talked with the media for the first time this fall. Both were great and covered a lot of topics - I'll post the full videos later on today (have to go run some errands). Both are also very laid back but focused and are both entering the season with the mindset that they are going to play.

The timing of all this was kind of funny as this was again one of their least impressive practices, coming off one of their west all fall occurring yesterday.

There were at least four picks during live periods today and three or four more were dropped. Kazee and the first team safeties all had chances on the ball each drive/series it seemed like - sometimes due to the quarterback being off target and sometimes due to the receiver being on the wrong spot or just not on the same page as the QB. The first half of practice in particular was really bad. But I will say that the last couple of series were actually some of the more impressive ones of camp. Jake Rodrigues found Jabril Clewis for a long touchdown (although there were two and the screen game also looked much better today, leading to several big gains for Penny, Pumphrey and Price. Pumphrey in particular showed off his shiftiness in the second level and broke two or three long ones. I thought the run blocking overall was much better today, but the pass pro leaves a lot to be desired. As well as some of the first teamers have performed during the one on ones, it hasn't shown up consistently during live periods. I definitely think that can be fixed overtime with more repetitions together for the first unit. Coach Mike Schmidt also seems to be focusing a bit more on pass pro as of late too.

I should also note that the quarterbacks spent one or two periods working on their deep balls/timing with the receivers today, with Coach Morgan yelling at them "feel and know your receiver" each rep. I mentioned this a bit in a previous post when the lack of connections on throws 25+ yards.

We might see a change come Saturday, because prior to today, I pictured fans complaining about how the QBs aren't "airing it out enough" following the public scrimmage. Now that there's more of an emphasis on it, the fans who attend may actually get to see a handful of highlight deep passes/catches compared to runs and check downs. Again, that's if the OL has a good day in pass pro. I also believe Saturday will decide which QB "starts"/plays with the first-team.

On defense, like I mentioned, pretty much all the DBs had a really good day. Kazee in particular. He breaks on the ball better than any other DB. Super quick. Kameron Kelly and Parker Baldwin also had good days and are proving they will get reps at DB and extensive reps on special teams.

SDSU didn't move anyone on the DL with Heyward gone so Barrett and Sanchez stayed at end. Noble Hall was with the ones and Malcolm Jackson was with the twos. Both were solid. Hall doesn't look like he has much lower body strength but he gets the job done.

I didn't point him out much in my post yesterday but Fely had a really really good day yesterday and it was the same thing today. I'd say he's truly at 100 percent now. Jay Henderson had a rough outing and didn't look as aggressive and instinctual as he needs to be.

Of the injured guys, Marcus Stamps was back out of a boot but still remained with Adam Hall. Sam Tai, Nick Bawden, JJ Whittaker and Christian Heyward also spent time with Hall. Heyward mainly did pushups and non leg stuff. Whittaker stayed off his ankle again.

Hey Ruben...

does the Az transfer, Ryan Dunn see the field this year outside of special teams units?
Could you give us your thoughts on the 2-deep at the LBer position?

Also, Coach Long thinks the OL is in pretty good shape, starting group anyway. Your
impressions?
Thanx

Practice notes Day 11

Today SDSU did a lot of scrimmaging this morning (for its only practice of the day), and because I can't report everything that I saw I will keep this post short.

First and foremost, the offense probably had its worse practice in quite some time. They didn't do much 7-on-7 at all - and, as I told you recently, the QBs need to experience more full contact live 11-on-11 stuff - so the staff really tested them today during the extended live scrimmaging. Not too surprisingly, the QBs crumbled for the most part. There were maybe two or three really good throws total on the day. A Chapman to Mills 40+ yard touchdown and a Smith to Wells 25+ yard gain up the seam (which was blown coverage by Kendrick Mathis).

(Actually there was one more: Smith threw a deep ball down the sideline to Judge, and while it was slightly under thrown, Judge adjusted his speed and position to jump over Dwayne Parchment and bring it in. The call was he was just out of bounds, however. Of the receivers I though Favreau and Hazely both had really good days but the QBs didn't connect with them very much, at least from what I saw.)

During the majority of the rest of the practice, the throws just weren't connecting. The pass protection was decent but the OL also struggled getting out in the screen game. There were a lot of slow developing RB screen calls that ended up with the running back being gang tackled instantly or the linebackers swatting the pass away. Just a really bad day. Jeff Horton ended up pulling the whole group aside after practice, yelling at them to pick it up and stop being lazy etc. I even noticed DJ Pumphrey running cross field sprints after practice under Horton's direction too.

Worth noting Bawden has looked much more comfortable catching the ball in the flat as a fullback. He had two or three of those catches for 5-8 yard gains today. Also worth noting that TE Darryl Richardson is practicing again.

On defense, Trey Lomax, Tyler Morris, Ryan Dunn, Austin Wyatt Thayer, Jordan Watson, Na'Im McGee and Dakota Turner had strong days. Watson and Morris had some really nice pass deflections in the backfield and Kalan Montgomery also came up with a pick six today. Lomax also got a pick that was a badly overthrown pass by Chapman over the middle - more too high than overthrown, to be specific. Watson still looks good even with the club.

The big news again was Christian Heyward going down but both coaches seemed to sincerely believe he will be fine. If he isn't, Lewis said that anyone on the defensive line can play either end or tackle so it shouldn't be a big deal. Said Sanchez can even play inside if need be.
