Talent Upgrade: Receivers

Everyone now realizes the lack of talent at wr. Imho, the non-commits on this list need to be a priority, as in Rocky, much like Jim Mora and Steve Sarkisian do, needs to personally get involved w/ their recruiting. This is the type of group we need to bring in to raise the talent level. We have legit shots at all of the non-commits on this list. And from what I've read, Patmon is really, really liking us, surprisingly. Watch their tape. Tell me that doesn't get you excited about what could be.

So hopefully the group we sign at WR this year looks something like this:

1. Devion Clayton 6'4 185 ran 10.89 100m and plays corner

2. Desmon Patmon 6'4 205 could probably start next year

3. Isaiah Macklin 6'5 205 plays big yet has wiggle; red zone matchup

4. Tim Wison 6'4 185 fast, smooth, hands

5. Chad Holloway 6'4 185 reminds me of demarco in HS, same body type and gait, cut backs

Note: We already have plenty of guys we can play in the slot- Mills, Holder, Favreau, Chaney.
Outside is the big concern.

Turnovers

After watching the fumbles at Penn, in my opinion, I believe the cause of the fumbles was not in the coaching. I believe the cause of the fumbles, was the players were trying really hard to make plays to help the team win. Also Phumpries was being tackled by guys twice his size, Mills was trying to repeat the week's before performance and Smith didn't see it coming. Can't put that on the coaches.

Penn State Game Thoughts

Horton …..ugh! What are his credentials as an OC? We are very predictable as we run mostly between the tackles with a small RB (thank god Pump is a tough guy but he took some shots yesterday). On our third TD, why didn’t we give D. Gordon a shot? Gordon is a non-factor this year as either a ball carrier or catcher. OL is a real concern. We need to get Penny, DJ and either Price/Stamps on the field at the same time. We need play makers on offense and Penny has proved that he needs more than just 1 jet sweep a game.

Got to tip my hat to the defense, played their heart out vs. PSU. Fely is a beast.

Figured we would be 2-2 after 4 games (maybe 3-1), so it is only the South Alabama game that looks pretty ugly as we go into conference play.

Happy Valley is in the middle of nowhere, nothing else but PSU so it made it a good college town, but I didn’t find the game day experience on par with the other Big-10 /Midwest games.

Some small updates

Injuries

-Nico Siragusa (sprained ankle) didn't practice on Tuesday and only practiced a little bit on Wednesday. He's cleared to play and everything but it will all likely depend on how he feels at game time I'm guessing. From the sounds of it, he'll tough it out on Saturday.
-Jake Fely didn't practice on Tuesday due to sickness but he was at full-speed on Tuesday and is cleared to play on Saturday.
-Dakota Tuner is the player with the shoulder pain. It is NOT Dakota Gordon, which Rocky mistakenly told me on Sunday. Turner is fine, though. He's been practicing the entire week. He's also coming off a really good game and Rocky called him one of the tougher players on the team.

-SDSU has been practicing with crowd noise coming through the loud speakers out on the field. SDSU has done this before for big-time road games but the new wrinkle this week was to add in music with the crowd noise. Rocky said he can't stand nothing but crowd noise for the entirety of practice so this was the happy medium. As of Wednesday, he said he hardly even notices the crowd noise now and hopes the players feel the same way.

-Walk on wide receiver Curtis Anderson III has been added to the travel squad.

Press conference notes

-Rocky Long said the team is excited to play in a stadium where they have never been.
-It's a challenge. PSU has multiple potential NFL draft picks and a Heisman candidate at quarter back.
-The OL is not as skilled as last year's group so the seams created in the run game aren't as big as they should be.
-Long talked about the perception that people have on the program compared to reality.
-When asked, Long said that if SDSU wants to be the next TCU, they need more money. It's as simple as that.
-He said he would like to put up a front and be philosophical, but he's not good at memorizing lies he's made up when he's asked about them later on.

-Malik Smith said missing Trey Lomax is like missing a 'heartbeat'.
-Lloyd Mills defended coach Long. "We believe in the coaching staff. We just need to make more plays. He didn't miss blocks, he didn't make tackles...Just relax. We're not where we need to be..just relax and let us play."
-Smith: None of this is on Coach Long. I disagree with that.
-Smith said everybody's mad about losing in the locker room. 'We're real determined to win this game."

Sunday updates

Nico Siragusa - He twisted his ankle during the second to last offensive series, but played out the last series (despite limping around a bit on the field). No update on what the trainers thought of him today. If it's anything substantial, Sergio Phillips or Antonio Rosales will probably battle for the starting spot this week. Should know more by tomorrow.

Jake Fely - No real update. We won't know his status until he is cleared by team trainers and actually practices by Wednesday.
