Days like yesterday and today were built for guys like Matt P. Baseball was busy WHOPPIN UCSB, Softball and Womens' Soccer were playing at the same time. Coach Martinez' young pitchers struck out FOURTEEN last night
Sad that there is no mention of the Spring soccer schedule or games for SDSU men or women soccer on goaztecs or any social media platforms.
Watched SDSU women last night vs UC Riverside. Biggest challenge known has been what to do with the loss of significantly talented seniors that were studs at the heart of the defense and offense. Please keep in mind that seniors don't play in these games and the incoming freshmen are not in yet. So SDSU played with just two subs.
As he has done for a decade, Mike is going to leverage two of his midfielders from last year and convert them into Center Backs. That formula worked well for first 75% of the game. Late in game he inserted couple of players that didn't play at all last year and SDSU gave up a goal (the only goal of the game). Should also be noted that Gabby English (top goalie in MW) was also not in the goal in second half. So if that's the plan, SDSU will have a very experienced, athletic and skilled back 4 complimented by 2 very good holding mids. Defense will be just fine.
Unfortunately, what didn't get resolved is what to do on offense. Arnasdottir got benched for last 5 games of season and yesterday vs UC Riverside (not even in top 10 programs in California), she didn't beat anyone one on one. The other European player on roster was tried at Midfielder and was not effective at all. There are a handful of very good pieces such as Mia (#19) who will be one of top Forwards in league and 3 other good midfielders but SDSU has to find couple of other forwards but the two Euros are not the answer.
SDSU's talent/depth is the Sophmores and Juniors as there is only one Senior on the roster (transfer from Idaho), Niki who will be asked to play attacking mid this year.
What we saw last night was predictable and Spring games are essentially scrimmages. Really curious to see what the incoming recruiting class brings as there is opportunity to help at 3 or 4 spots for sure. We saw the Canadian recruit Florence play and she showed some flashed up top.
