Today was the last practice of fall camp (unless you count the public scrimmage on Saturday) and sadly, I don't have much to report as it was more of a walk-through light practice to "freshen them up" for the scrimmage. There are a couple things though:
-DJ Pumphrey, Christian Heyward and Sam Tai won't play in the scrimmage - Marcus Stamps is unlikely.
-JJ Whittaker, Jake Fely, Calvin Munson and Chase Price won't play much either.
-The QBs will alternate with both the first and second OL units.
-Rocky said today Chase is the No. 2 back. Penny and Washington will get the bulk of the carries on Saturday.
-Long said he hopes Heyward will be able to return by the Monday of game week (vs. USD), which means he won't practice for a little over one week.
-Nick Bawden, who was working out with Adam Hall yesterday and again today has a high ankle sprain but it doesn't look too serious. It's more wear and tear from the fullback position. He could potentially play in the scrimmage but I doubt it.
-TE Darryl Richardson has healed pretty quickly since returning and looked really comfortable out there today. I haven't seen him making plays for at least a week in practice now but I wouldn't be surprised if he makes some plays on Saturday.
-Chatted Coach Schmidt today and he made it pretty clear that the starting five is set: Miller, Siragusa, Flores, Craighead and Slater.
-Flores' snaps and QB exchanges at center have been brought up on this board before and he did have two noticeably off target snaps. Schmidt said they're putting more of an emphasis on it as of late, though.
-An interesting tidbit that was brought up is that SDSU and USD coaches are legally allowed to attend the opposing team's public scrimmage but neither will likely do so.
"The ethics of the situation is we won't go to theirs and they won't go to ours.... I have total confidence that - they're old school, we're old school - they're not going to do anything like that."
-Rocky and the staff has watched every USD game from last season.
