Three things

What are the three things you need to see on Saturday to feel more confident heading into Stanford week and the rest of the year...

Mine are one:

-The SDSU o-line rises to the occasion. Although ASU's front was just OK last Thursday, they have a really fast front, particularly ILB Christian Sam and edge rusher Koron Crumpf. Their nose tackle Tashon Smallwood is also a load.

-The tall WRs don't have any drops and prove they are legit. I think I will have some great jump ball opputunities.

- The secondary keeps everything in front of them ASU has legit team speed on offense. Don't get burned because of an overcofident angle.

SDSU BB conference schedule changes

This season will be a bit different, per GoAztecs:

SAN DIEGO – Four San Diego State men’s basketball games have moved from Wednesday to Tuesday as part of the Mountain West’s television agreement with its broadcast partners. The four affected games will occur during the 2017-18 conference campaign.

SDSU will face Colorado State in Fort Collins on Jan. 2 rather than Jan. 3. The Aztecs’ home contest vs. San Jose State has been moved from Jan. 10 to Jan. 9. San Diego State’s annual trip to Fresno State will be played on Feb. 6 and not Feb. 7. The final change affects the home game vs. Boise State, which will occur on Feb. 27, instead of Feb. 28.

The Aztecs’ non-conference schedule is not complete, but will be announced once it is finalized. San Diego State’s television assignments and game times for its conference slate will also be released once the Mountain West’s TV partners have finished making their game selections.

Great work

I didn't give enough credit for how good of a play Ron Smith's INT was (watch the last .gif). Smith lined up in what looked like man, dropped back into zone, looked off the underneath route before backtracking to the deeper route leading behind him. UC Davis' QB made a bad throw but Smith would have made a play on the ball regardless because of the way so well he reacted to the routes happening around him. Fantastic play.

NCAA transfer rule proposal

I'm sure you have all seen this story circulating by now:

http://footballscoop.com/news/ncaa-...y-eliminate-permission-contact-proposal-says/

Tonight Rocky commented on the idea of players being able to immediately transfer with no one-year restriction. This may surprise some, but he agreed with the proposal, as long as players are only allowed to transfer freely once in their collegiate career. If they ask for a second transfer request, they should sit out a year in his opinion.

Two freshmen

True freshmen LB Andrew Aleki and OC Dominic Gudino have not practiced the past two days and will not travel to ASU unless they can return tomorrow.

They are both sick. Rocky wouldn't confirm what their issue was, but you can take a guess.

Hint: They are roommates.

Monday night notes

Rashaad Penny went down during a scout team period, causing a scare and one half of the practice field to be completly halted. He had to be helped off the field by two team trainers. It was a quad contusion/bruise but the trainers were stretching/working with him a lot on the ground/sidelines. Rocky Long said Keith Ismael's knee made contact with his thigh.

Penny stood on his own after about five minutes. He walked off the fiekd fine on h I s own at the end of practice.

Dakota Turner was not at practice (knee). He had another ACL and is done for the year. Hopefully he can get a NCAA medical waiver for an extra year.

Parker Baldwin practiced but Parker Houston didn't (no helmet). Houston looked like he delivered more of the umph in their collision on Saturday but Baldwin seems to be 100 percent cleared.

NT Sergio Phillips is still out with concussion protocol.

True freshmen Warrior safeties Darren Hall and Tariq Thompson each got first team reps and looked good (repacing both Lomax and Trent Thompson)

DE Anthony Luke is back and he looked great. Really. Really great but it's likely because he's fresh compared to the other linemen.

True frosh Andrew Aleki was with the second team as the line of scrimmagw 'backer and also looked food.

Rashaad Pemny Juwan Washington Isaiah Richardson and Kam Kelly looked good during kick returns.

DE Forrest Hanlon and LB Dru Mathis are no longer on the team.

TE David Wells is stil just walking.

FB Isaac Lessard was wearing a boot.

Noble Hall, Damon Moore and Myles Cheatum were the first team d-line.

Some practice notes

-Dwayne Johnson Jr. is now listed as the backup Aztec safety.

Before Saturday, Will Stricklin and Johnson were listed as the backup Aztec safeties behind Parker Baldwin (even though it's really Trey Lomax, which Trenton Thompson would move up to Lomax's warrior spot in that case).

Side note: Rewatching the game, Stricklin as expected was a human missile on special teams. He was wiping out the lead blocks on kickoff returns. Him and Tariq Thompson are the best pound for pound hitters for sure.

-Parker Houston practiced and looked fine. He tweaked his ankle during the game but he's good.

-Safety Dwayne Parchment did not play in the first game at all. Parchment suffered an injury "behind his knee" during practice last week. Still not sure how severe it is.

End zone Suggestion

Loved the Aztecs feel for the stadium however I think the end zone did not stand out. Why not have one side with red paint with black lettering and black paint with red lettering the opposite end zone. I think it will stand out and brand our school colors. How can I contact to make this suggestion? Go Aztecs beat the Scumdevils!

UC Davis takeaways

The front six was fantastic. They only gave up two runs of 10 or more yards. I thought they gave UCD's passing offense pretty good pressure but the Aggies did a fine job mixing up their play calls and putting their QB in spots where he could either get the ball out quick or rollout to buy time.

Ron Smith had a great game other than that first deep ball. Kameron Kelly was reading the field very well too. Lomax's read and hit on that 3rd and goal to force a FG was all I needed to see that's he's locked in this year.

The starting secondary's interceptions were both pretty lucky but their coverage was crisp for 85 percent of the game. That second long catch that Keelan Doss made when there were three DBs surrounding him yet none were close enough to make a play on the ball was ugly. But, honestly, I expected the secondary to have 3 or 4 instances like that in game one. They limited those plays where they looked lost.

I thought Troy Cassidy was one of the best pass rushers of the night while Ronley Lakalaka's pursuit against plays that could have gone for decent gains was great. Like the coaches want, he kept cutting off the ball to make the offense go sideways.

The offensive line played as well as I hoped. Rashaad Penny and Christian Chapman never took a clean shot and a lot of that had to do with the o-line. They weren't hesitant or second guessing themselves whatsoever despite UCD loading up the box. I'm looking forward to reviewing their play but I'm betting I'll feel the same way afterward.

The receivers are legit. When's the last time you saw separation and consistent hands like tonight from the receivers?

I'm very happy for Warring. He was having a rough fall camp but his athleticism alone will allow him to have big games every now and then like tonight. The 180 catch he made up the seam was NFL-like.

Richardson and Houston both lived up to the hype I've been sharing on here since the spring. Houston's a bulldog and he showed it by running over that poor DB and Richardson's breakaway speed is ridiculous for his build.

Rashaad Penny made everything look easy today, to the point where I felt like he had more in him. For as many arm tackles as he broke, he honestly could have done more damage.

The punting was fine but the special teams coverage was fantastic.

The second team defense looked as if they did not expect they'd be stepping on the field tonight. It was a major disappointment. UCD had a field day against them.
