The Rocky Long era

this season is not over yet, and it is hazardous to draw conclusions at this point, but I think the Rocky Long era will now go down as the best era of football at SDSU with success he has had. Three consecutive victories over pac 10 teams, two consecutive conference championships, a program run with no embarrassing off the field incidents, and attendance rivaling the Don Coryell years leads me to conclude this is the best era of football at SDSU.

I used to think that the Don Coryell era was the best time for Aztec fans with a number of very successful seasons and wins. But by and large this was accomplished with significant part of team being transfers from four year schools, and at time the big wins were against Long Beach ST. Fresno St. and San Jose State. in addition recruiting is picking up and the current team is talked about as the favorite at this point to represent the disadvantaged group of 5 to play in the Fiesta Bowl.

with wining the MWC two consecutive years and having prime out of conference successes against Pac 10 teams, I think the Rocky Long Era is the best we have ever seen at SDSU.

Enjoy it while it lasts.

Monday updates/injuries

-Antonio Rosales was wearing a boot on his left ankle and was walking very gingerly. Didn't practice.

-Nick Gerhard and Dom Gudino still seem to be the top two options at right guard.

-DE Dakota Turner still wearing braces but warmed up with the team today. Getting closer and closer to returning to practice. Crazy recovery.

-Rashaad Penny looked much fresher today than he did last Monday. He looked great actually.

-Parker Baldwin had his left knee wrapped but is fine.

-FYI Jeff Horton doesn't plan to burn the redshirts of the freshman running backs.

-Kaegun Williams was doing sprints with Adam Hall but he looked fine.

-Safety Trenton Thompson was wearing trainers but practiced somewhat.

-Temerick Harper is no longer in a boot.
Didn't practice though.

SDSU beats AFA, 28-24 - Good/Bad

Good

Zero penalties (!!!!!!)

Christian Chapman's ability in clutch moments isn't a fluke. He was money again when the offense needed it.

Trey Lomax had a fantastic game and single handedly kept AFA from busting runs on the outside pitches at times. Glad he got the game clinching pick.

The defensive line stepped up. They were getting smoked off the ball during large portions of the game but guys like Luke and Cheatum came up huge. Not too many missed tackles by the linebackers either, other than those dives/slips during AFA's first rushing touchdown up the sideline.

Bad

The punting unit is starting to become an eye sore. Both on punts and returns. They paid for it tonight.

Ron Smith nearly gave up an easy TD when he bit on the play action that was luckily under thrown.

Penny and Washington's overall health. Both looked really beat up.

Top 25 watch

Relevant:
Stanford leads UCLA 19-13 in the first half.
Arizona State leads No. 24 31-14

Other Top 25:
No. 17 Mississippi State was blown out by No. 11 Georgia, 31-3.
No. 12 Florida State fell to NC State 27-21
No. 20 Florida barely got past Kentucky, 28-27

Most teams took care of business but I can see SDSU maybe passing up (17) Miss. St., (20) Florida (21) South Florida and mayyyyybeeee (12) Florida State.

UNLV vs Ohio State

23–0 at the beginning of the second quarter. It looks like another ugly game with MW versus P5.

So far, the only MW teams showing well are SDSU and Air Force, with their great game against Michigan. Yes, they lost to Michigan, but gave him a great game.

I think we are emerging as the dominant team in our conference and taking that position away from Boise State. Will see how it plays out!

Thursday updates on Rosales

-OL Antonio Rosales "should be ready" to play vs. Air Force on Saturday. Rocky said he still looked "gimpy" on his ankle during practice but trainers think he'll be fine.

As of today, Nick Gerhard would be his replacement at right guard. Joe Salcedo hasn't fared too well at guard so Dominic Gudino is probably ahead of him too, if not tied with Gerhard.

-Rocky said Rashaad Pemny was fresher today. Should be fine.

-Sophomore DB/special teamer Trenton Thompson (groin) may not play this week. Didnt practice yesterday and was puled from practice today.

Walkon safety Israel Cabrera is the backup safety along with Tariq Thompson.

-CB Kameron Kelly banged up his thigh during Tuesday's practice but is fine and practiced fully today.

-DE Noble Hall won't have to wear a club vs. Air Force. Didnt have an ice pack on it after practice today either.

Stanford: Good/Bad

Good
-Time of possession battle - kept it close because of the defense in the first quarter.

-The 3-4 worked. Stanford had three straight three and outs to begin the game.

-Mikah Holder stepped up big. He was the only one really saving Chapman from taking sacks early on.

-Kam Kelly sacks/ Ron Smith interception

Bad

-No conversion on the early 4th and short. Would John Baron II be able to have enough distance there?

-Love lost - Bryce Love broke a 51-yarder behind some great blocks to go ahead 7-3.

Computer Modeling Fun

For those of you with time on your hands, here's a site with all of the computer modeling rankings. SDSU has a pretty wide range of rankings and that's mostly due the small number of games. After 5 games, you'll see the models start to converge(mostly). You can click on the model up top to get to their site and some of them will show future game scores...

The good and bad: ASU

Good

Rashaad Penny. Nuff said.

Offensive line didn't shy away.

John Baron II

Christian Chapman missed some guys early on but that quick release to Penny was a big time play

Bad

Ronley Lakalaka carted off.

DB hiccups, but mostly due to poor pressure up front...it's hard to get pressure when ASU spreads the defense out with four and five wide on a lot of downs....

Penalties (false starts, holding, excessive roughness after whistle, receiver push off, everything really)
