Surgery

Just confirmed safety Trenton Thompson will have surgery tomorrow. His groin has been bugging him since last season and he missed practices this spring. Staff doesn't feel like he will be able to play on it again until surgery so they might as well do it now.

Thompson could have really helped this week.

The safeties today were Tariq Thompson, Trey Lomax and Darren Hall.

Parker Baldwin's knees need a rest so he didn't practice today. Rocky seemed confident that Baldwin will be good to go tomorrow. Worst case scenario if Hall has to get his first start as a true freshman. He had some blown coverages in the 4th quarter of the UC-Davis game.

Sunday updates

Parker Baldwin is the only defensive player Danny Gonzales named as more beat up then the norm. His knee has been bugging him since the Air Force game.

I spotted Antonio Rosales leaving the building today with no boot and he wasn't really limping. The coaches will decide tomorriw when they should let him practice versus resting the ankle a few more days.

Good/Bad NIU

Good
The pass rush seemed more consistent
Jay Henderson big third down sacks

Bad
3rd down defense (7-13)
3rd down offense (1-9)
Rashaad Penny's eyes
Antonio Rosales didn't dress - the run game struggled
Ron Smith got burned deep on countless occasions.
Penalties return - Noble Hall's unsportsman like/automatic first down was horrible.

Jeff Horton

Took the blame for the offense's lack of roduction. Said NIU's defense was one of the best they'll face but his play calling could have better. He was happy about the near 50:50 run-pass ratio though.

Also said Mikah Holder was a big part of their gameplan so when he was ejected that also hurt the offense.

Aztecs have opened as 13.5 points favorites and are as low as 12 pt favorites in some places.

Just to get the obvious out of the way. NI had a bye week this past weekend and in their last game, upset Nebraska on the road. Nebraska barely beat a weak Rutgers team yesterday. NIU also lost to Boston College (1-3) to start the season.

Glad Aztecs are relatively healthy and looking forward to them rolling in front of a BIG HOMECOMING crowd this weekend.

GO AZTECS!!!!

A LA Times letter to the editor praises SDSU

The letter was written by a gentleman who lives in Alta Loma,Ca(FYI Rocky's still a legend on the Alta Loma High campus, his alma mater.)

The letter states "I have a question for Jim Mora. UCLA recruits three-star and four-star players, while San Diego State gets the leftovers. How do they hold the same Stanford team to 17 points that runs over
UCLA for 58? How does every team seem to score at will against your defense? The
answer is coaching.............,..,.."

Go Aztecs

RR

I noticed senior LB Randy Ricks in the athletics center but he wasn't at practice. The fact that he hasn't logged that many snaps this seasons made me want to ask Rocky if something was up.

Rocky said Ricks hasn't been with the team this week to deal with a 'personal issue.' He wouldn't go much farther. He did say that Ricks did play vs. Air Force, referencing one long touchdown score that was caused when Ricks lined up wrong.

Ricks won't play this week and his return timetable is unknown.

Wednesday notes

-Senior RG Antonio Rosales is no longer in a boot but he didn't practice today. Only ran a bit. Rocky went as far to say that Rosales, if cleared, will play on Saturday even if he doesn't practice during Thursday's final practice.

-Dakota Turner practiced yesterday and apparentky had some soreness but he was cleared to practice again today. If he's not too sore tomorrow and practices, he should be cleared.

Rocky said that Turner is clearly the best D-lineman they have, since during today's practice he noticed that he made zero assignment errors compared to three or four by the rest of the line.

Juwan Washington (ankle) could have returned in SDSU's win last night but didn't need to. He's fine.

Chase Jasmin was available to play.

Noble Hall also took shots to the shin and thigh but he's expected to be fine, espiecially if the bruising heals quick.

SDSU Accolades

ESPNU College Football Live - 2 of 3 said SDSU is unquestionably the best Group of 5 team. Schedule sets them apart from S. Florida. Red headed guy(sorry not sure who he is, was really enthusiastic saying something like Aztecs everyday baby.

ESPNU Radio - Matt Gundy believe he's the Oklahoma State HC, said he caught the end of the 2nd half of the SDSU - Stanford game. Said what a great game.

I'm sure everyone can add a hundred links to this thread.
