Monday updates

Antonio Rosales "is a lot better" according to Rocky, according to the team doctors. He spent all last week in a boot but practiced today. That said, today was a light day with no pads. Rocky doesn't know if Rosales will be allowed to keep the boot or not tomorrow when they go full pads. The doctors get the final say.

After the bye week, Rocky said his main concern is about the players losing sharpness. He said the team is fresh but he's worried about lapses in fundamentals.

Myles Cheatum and Ronley Lakalaka are fully cleared. Lakalaka has been good to go for a while. Cheatum was in a boot all last week to rest his foot but is cleared.

am I missing something???

Just for laughs, I looked at the ap top 25. After the Fresno game loss we were no 26, then after beating Hawaii, we drop down to 31, with 3 votes, then after beating the socks off of San Jose, we only get 1 vote. In my humble opinion, we played everybody on the side lines including some of the cheerleaders. I know we played lousy for two games but, now we are back, how can we lose votes? I know it don't count for anything but WTF.

SDSU season opener

What do you guys want/need to see tonight vs SDCC, home of the only roundabout I've seen and driven on in San Diego County?

For me:

- How SDSU starts out and whether or not they have sloppy moments. Also, is he turnover talk legit or a myth? Dutcher has admitted to looking ahead to the ASU game and hasn't thought much about this one.

-Devin Watson in attack mode. He was setting up the offense well in the first game but I never really saw him trying to beat his defender off the dribble alone. He's capable of doing that and he'll have to show it when SDSU faces good guards at bigger schools, not like some of the opponents he saw in his previous conference.

-Jalen McDaniels and Matt Mitchell. I would like to see them get strong minutes again and not sitting on the bench for any long stretches.

-The offense should at least near the 90s again in scoring. Obviously SDCC doesn't have much of an athletic program. I've wondered before how they can even recruit? Do they take their recruits visiting to the Santee town shopping center for fun?

Wednesday notes

LB Ryan Dunn has quit the team due to lack of playing time. That's why LB Kaelin Himphill is getting more opportunities in practice. Rocky gave Dunn two days to rethink his decision. "He didn't come back."

LB Randy Ricks is still out taking care of personal "business." He's probably done. I still see him around the facility so I'd guess he is in somewhat good standing with the team.

DE Noble Hall didn't play against SJSU due to a violation of team rules. Rocky Long said he has a shorter leash but it was a one game punishment. He has one strike right now but has practiced this week.

LB Ronley Laklaka was with the injured group during practice on Tuesday and Rocky said he has been in a boot earlier this week because of a sprained ankle. He also left the SJSU game in crutches. Somehow, Lakalaka has healed extremely fast and now he's back practicing again. He did 7v7 and individual drills today. He didn't warm up with the team on Tuesday.

LB Kyahva Tezino and Tyler Morris/Troy Cassidy are running with the ones (until Lakalaka's back to full speed).

On offensive lineman Antonio Rosales, doctors think he'll be better if he wears the boot all week.

He hasn't been cleared to play but the plan still seems like he may go next week if it heals. Team doctors can't find any other issues other than the ankle sprain being a bit of a high ankle sprain. They've only done MRIs though. Remember, nobody knew what was exactly wrong with Dakota Tuener's knee injury until he actually had surgery and the doctor really got in there.

DE Myles Cheatum (foot) played a little vs SJSU and is practicing more this week then he did last week. He could start again this year.

Tuesday notes

Antonio Rosales was in a boot on his left foot and didn't practice. The more he wears that this week the better, in my opinion.

A new addition to the injured group that didn't warm up was LB Ronley Lakalaka. Either he's beat up and got the day off or there's something else going on. Rocky isn't available for comment until tomorrow.

Lakalaka joined Keoni Stallworth, Trenton Thompson, Garrett Binkley and Rosales in that group. Zero crutches.

Noble Hall was practicing with the team so his absence against SJSU was probably not injury related.

There were a handful of scouts at practice today, including the Packers and Texans. Noticed a few looking at Wells, Pemmy and Kelly. They also took notice of Rosales' boot.

Tuesday practice notes (SJSU week)

-Through two days, it definitely appears that Antonio Rosales and his ankle are having the best week of practice in several weeks. That doesn't mean he's coming off the ball like he's truly capable of, but the improvement of his limp is obvious. He still seems pretty frustrated about how long this ankle issue has gone on though.

Rosales was actually with the first team during drills today though. He took back Keith Ismael's spot at right guard while Dominic Gudino remained at first team center.

-This may not amount to anything but I noticed some sort of wrap around Ismael's left shoulder. That may be the reason why Rosales was with the first unit. Remember, Ismael had surgery on his shoulder this summer.

-Backup tackle Joe Salcedo didn't participate in drills at all today and I don't know why. I'll get more injury updates when Rocky is available tomorrow.

-It's worth noting that SDSU did send out its entire second team o-line against Hawaii.

Salcedo and Kyle Spalding were the tackles while Zach Thomas and Nick Gerhard came in. Rosales even came in for one snap when one of the guards had his helmet fall off during the game.

-I should also mention OL Coach Mike Schmidt seemed to be stressing 'communication' on the o-line during drills. I'm guessing they expect SJSU to stunt a lot.

-DE Myles Cheatum was with the d-line group today but only watched drills from the side. No sign yet if he can go this weekend or not.

Even thought the sooner he returns the better, I'm betting the staff has more confidence in playing without him after Chibu's performance last week.

-Just like yesterday, Parker Baldwin practiced in drills but most of the open practice portion was decidicated to Bobby Hauck and special teams play so I don't know if he did any actual live action. It's likely that Dwayne Johnson is taking first team reps during the live action periods.

-Soph. DB Trent Thompson was watching practice again. Rehab seems to be going well.

-CB Garrett Binkley is no longer using crutches to watch practice, but DB Keoni Stallworth is.

- I really like the development of freshman OT
Desmond Bessent. He could be a lraner yet meaner version of Pearce Slater.

-If this is confirmed, one major note that I've been missing is that I noticed a No. 13 with the safety group.

No. 13 also was wearing a club on his right hand...

If that No. 13 is indeed freshman WR Isaiah Richardson, it's possible the staff made a position change.

This would be surprising to me because he had an excellent fall camp as a receiver. My hope is that SDSU moved him to DB for this season only because of his hand injury, and will move him back to WR when he's actually able to catch the ball without the club.

If so, that's the smarter approach in my opinion because it keeps him involved in practice instead of shadowing the WR group.

Plus, it opens up the possibilty of a potential postion change to DB if he ends up performing really well in practice. I still believe he will be a fantastic WR down the line though and having him play some DB could even benefit him more as a receiver too.

-NFL scouts from the Bills and Jags were at practice today.

NIce write up on the Defense New Starters Ruben

Excellent as always. wondering about two things get you opinion on. Next year who do you see at Nose tackle besides Moore? They Burned the true frosh JJ Glass redshirt,I think he is kind of a find very quick small strong guy. We have a long tradition nasty little nose tackles Then there is Conner Mitchell who I don't think has played this year but does not have a redshirt so he will be a sophomore. At corner Will it be Woods ,Hawkins maybe Venable?

Wednesday notes (SJSU week)

Antonio Rosales won't play this week. Still only participatibg in individual drills.

SDSU will stick with the same starting five.

-Something I didn't realise is that Keith Ismael is still wearing a sling on his shoulder since he had summer surgery, preventing him from raising his arm to a certain point. He has played with it on all season.

-Myles Cheatum (foot) and Damon Moore won't play this week.

Cheatum participated in some skelly periods along with individual drills. He is wearing orthotics in his shoes.

Moore (elbow) can't even make it through walk throughs, warmups. Maybe done for the regular season.

-Freshman WR Isaiah Richardson has a broken hand (fell on it during practice) but is remaining at WR. He was just with the safety group yesterday to run routes against them during individual drills.

-Pope and Bawden will continue to wear the club on their hands.

-Rocky expects all the commits to sign in December, but a rush of big name schools could show interest late. He feels like thr commits are on board with signing early.

He also said the staff isn't sure they will sign a midyear JuCo prospect. Will likely just sign a few freshman o-line.

Remember, ATH TJ Sullivan is expected to join the team in the spring.

Good/Bad Hawaii takeaways

Good

-Fresno St. loses to UNLV

-Rashaad Penny's career high 253 yards. Hawaii didn't attempt any stunts or crazy blitzes against for passing downs whew they o-line was....OK.

-The defense started strong and they kept getting better and better.

-This game was a great oppurtunity to put in Kyavah Tezino and Dwayne Johnson, arguably the best second stringers on the team when it comes to attacking the run. It wouldn't be a great matchup if the opponent was, say, Nevada.

Rocky said Tezino had a better week of practice than Troy Cassidy so he switched then. I bet that's because the scout team focused on running the ball since they knew that's what Hawaii was going to do, giving Tezino a stronger chance to start

-Jeff Horton tried more creative plays early. The delayed screen for Parker Houston and the end around for Mikah Holder for example.

I got worried with their first drive but they turned it around after that.

-Holder and Chapman kick started the offense once again, like they did in their last win against UNLV, setting up the run

Bad

Eight penalties, several of them during significant moments.

Late kickoff times suck.

ESPN blackouts.

Chapman's first real interception of the year. The streak is over.

Monday practice updates

LB Kyahva Tezino was with the first-team again over Troy Cassidy.

Aztec safety Parker Baldwin (hip/knees)was back with the first team over Dwayne Johnson Jr. during warmups. They will likely give Johnson a lot of first team reps during practice this week though.

The less Baldwin participates the better in my opinion. Also, this was a very light practice but it was still positive to see Baldwin out there.

DE Chibu Onyeukwu is on the first team. Unsure about Myles Cheatum's health. Dakota Turner is back to second string this week again, although it doesn't matter much done since SDSU has been rotating a lot up front anyway.

Again, this was a light practice but Antonio Rosales and his ankle did look better during warmups. I still think he'll get the SJSU game off though. My guess is SDSU will start the same o-line again with Gudino and Ismael inside.

Warrior safety Trenton Thompson attended practice and watched from the sideline. Hopefully he can start practicing in the spring.

Wednesday notes

Juwan Washington's shoulder is fine and ge oracticed all week.

Damon Moore (elbow) is out this weekend.

Myles Cheatum is probably out (foot). Cheatum had remained in a boot all week. Doubt he practices again tomorrow.

Jon'Darius Gardner and Chibu Onyeukwu will be the backups.

Antonio Rosales still can't show any of his power when he blocks because of his ankle. He's remained limited this week in ptactice bit is unlikely he will play Saturday. Gudibo and Ismael it is.
