Tuesday football updates

-Antonio Rosales was in a boot on Monday and he will continue to wear it this week.

-Rocky is "really, really" worried about the noonish kickoff time. Probably more so than playing on a short week. The heat could play a factor as well.

-UNM runs the zone triple-option out of the shotgun and their "dive" guy is Tyrone Owens, who leads the team in rushing yards. He's not like the fullback you see at Army and Air Force, he's a little scat back like Lexington Thomas.

-Rocky on QB Lamar Jordan: 'He reads it well and he doesn't make many mistakes. if he reads it well he can take it the distance."

Note: Jordan was 0-for-4 last week in passing but I doubt it matters.

-UNM doesn't have much to play for while SDSU feels pressure to play well and win the 10th game. Rocky said he's always concerned when it comes to playing teams in the Lobos situation.

Hoetzel

F Max Hoetzel is still day to day. Won't play in the tournament opener this week.

The swelling has gone down on his knee without requiring it to be drained. He's in "rehab" mode.

Dutcher: It’s how he feels and how much pain he’s got. It’s basically a bone bruise. It’s now just how quickly he’s able to heal. It might take a while so we're being cautious. Not going to rush him back for a preseason tournament.

Monday practice updates

-Monday practices are usually the lightest of the week so I wonder if they'll be treating today as if it's a Tuesday since it's a short week (maybe some live contact periods).

-Should be a physical game this Friday. Danny Gonzales had his safeties practice taking on cut blocks during warmups.

-I personally didn't see LB Ronley Lakalaka out there at practice. Either he was hiding somewhere or I'm going blind. Rocky will be able to answer that for me in about an hour.

-RG Antonio Rosales is back to wearing a boot on his left foot and he was with the same ol' injured group (Binkley, Stallworth, Trent Thompson).

By the looks of it, Rosales' is in a bowl game or bust schedule. It would be cool to see him out there playing at least one last time

-DT Damon Moore still has a big brace on his elbow and he was limited to doing individual drills on the sideline. The rest of the d-linemen were with the linebackers doing group drills.

-Former punter Neil Boudreau is still work8ng woth the QB group for anyone wondering.

-I said last week Ethan Dedeaux and Tayari Venable would likely be in the running to handle punt return duties next year, but I should also include WR Kyre Richardson to that mix.

-No Randy Ricks again, by the way.

Visitors for SDSU-UNR

Two players expected to join San Diego State this spring were in attendance.

-Former Mt. Carmel DB/WR Taj Sullivan
-Former San Marcos/Oregon State transfer, TE/DE Joah Robinette (walk on)

SDSU commits:
-San Marcos LB/RB Josh Bornes
-St Augustine WR JR Justice
-Faith Lutheran WR Elijah Kothe. He had surgery on his collar bone and is still in a sling. He said he gets to take it off in two weeks and will be playing with his basketball team this spring.

Recruits:

Clairemont DL Michael Azevedo. He's likely IVY league bound. Cal is close to offering as is SDSU, but both are pretty set with d-line commits.

From Riverside MLK, 2019 juniors DE Etuate Moala and LB Ethan Degennaro

Michigan 2020 OL Dallas Fincher, younger brother of former Aztec OL Trenton Fincher. Trenton medically retired due to a knee issue.

Phoenix AZ, Desert Vista QB Derek Klein .

Fantasy Scenario

SDSU wins next 2 games
Fresno losses in cold Wyoming tomorrow and then again to BS-U.
SDSU beats BS-U in the conference championship game.

South Florida beats Central Florida and goes to their championship game.
Memphis loses to SMU tomorrow and beats South Florida in their Championship game.

Akron beats Toledo in the MAC championship

SDSU gets the New Years Day bowl at 11-2

What? It could happen. That's my Fantasy and I'm sticking with it. Now I'm off to write my list for Santa Claus before bed.

Soccer

Very good weekend for both soccer teams on the Mesa.

Men opened their home season tonight and just defeated UCSB at home 3-1 in front of a GREAT crowd. Had USD had the same conviction and ethics as SDSU, USD would've been the home opener and SDSU wouldn't have gone on the road for a tourney at West Point. Anyhow, there is a great rivalry between SDSU and UCSB over the years so the coaches and those of us die hards from over the decades were jacked for tonight.

Men were picked to finish 4th in PAC-12, highest ever and well deserved after great year last year that included season sweeps of Cal and Washington. Stanford right now is at a very high level but fully expect SDSU to sweep Cal again. UCLA is likely better but SDSU is very much an upper echelon PAC-12 program now.

Women defeated USD handily on Friday night 3-1. Starting lineup and playing time is dominated by Freshmen and Sophmores logging around 70% of the mins. Sadly a defender quit the team last week so the back end rotation won't have much depth to go along with youth. Defense hasn't been the issue, just a matter of getting the offense going. USD hadn't scored a goal all year coming into the game so tough to use the game as a measuring stick as they're going through a total rebuild with a high caliber coaching staff loaded with recruiting talent that'll bring in very high talent in the future. This year USD women will be BAD.

SDSU Schedule overall has been very high caliber schedule with #1 ranked UCLA (looks like a national championship contender right now along with Stanford), ASU, LBSU, etc. and now next three on the road vs. Nebraska, Mizzou and Texas Tech. Team is lacking that pure scoring threat. Senior Utush is being counted on heavily but has missed 4 opportunities already 1:1 with goalie so far this year. With exception of USD game, Freshman Forward Arnarsdottir hasn't been effective at all. Curious to see what Coach Freisen does with lineups to muster some offense over next two weeks.

Women will be the class of MWC after a tough non-conference schedule. Haven't seen much of anything from other teams in MWC so it'll be a one-bid league again and will come down to winning the post season. Two years ago SDSU won regular season by wide margin before but has been left out after losing in MWC Tourney.

Tuesday notes

After seeing practice today I defijiteky got the "fresher' sense of the team Rocky brought up. You can tell everyone has an extra pep in their step and they're excited to play again this week.

Trenton Thompson, Keoni Stallworth and Garrett Binkley were back to being the only members of the injured group today. Thats a good thing.

Antonio Rosales looked very good coming in to practice but after running a bit on the ankle during warumps the limp began to show again. That said his legs definitely didn't look as stiff when he jogged/limped and I thought he looked relatively strong getting out of his stance. Probably the strongest he has looked against resistance since the injury.

There is no issue with Ronley Lakalaka's ankle. Watched him do a pass rushing drill and there was no lack of flexibility with his bend around the edge. He's fine.

Myles Cheatum definitely looks good to go and Damon Moore is fine. Moore's wearing a huge brace on his elbow though, which takes up his entire right arm.

I think JJ Glass could be the no. 2 nose tackle again this week (instead of Moore) behind Serg Phillips.

Freshmen Tayari Venable and Ethan Dedeaux look like the candidates to handle punt return duties next season.

There was an Arizona Cardinals scout at practice. I think he watched mostly Wells and Penny when I was there.

SDSU faces Nevada following bye week

Thanks for the write up on this week's game.

Out of both curiosity, and fun, could you ask Coach Long, when he sits back and watches other tream's games, as a college football spectator, does he ever second-guess the coaches or compliment the coaches for running an innovative play for a particular situation?

Ideal Stadium Size

The Acee post morphed into an Ideal Stadium Size post so I figured we might want to beat up that topic in a separate post.

A lot has changed since the initial SDSU West proposal was shown to the public about 18 months ago. The passage of time and submittal of competitive proposals has given us all a chance to reflect.

It certainly makes sense for the City of San Diego to attract an MLS franchise. Consider our proximity to the border and the futbol fans in our midst. And some of us feel the NFL has gotten way too big for its britches and is pricing itself into an elitist entertainment option that has no future legs.

Soccer stadia around the world aren't limited to 35,000 fans, or whatever number feng shui would consider to be ideal. If the entertainment option is priced right and the product is good, the right-sized stadium is the one that meets the demand for seats.

I'd say the same criteria apply to big-time college football.

So here's my bottom line ... and it's the bottom line.

San Diegans have not shown a tendency to spend public money on sports facilities. You can square that tendency when applied to public universities.

So let's say our product remains good, and we're in a sold-out 35,000 seat stadium. The options will be to expand the stadium to meet the demand, or charge more for the seats to create more revenue ... because it's always about more revenue.

If we charge more for the seats, we constrict demand; and when the product isn't as good, who wants to pay the big bucks? So now we have a smaller stadium and can't sell it out.

The alternative is to expand the stadium to meet the demand. There goes another $250,000,000, or whatever. And where does that money come from, and what does it take to sell the notion, say, seven or eight years after the stadium is constructed? The momentum to fund and construct a stadium exists today, but will to be there in 2030?

So my vote is to build the larger stadium today and do everything we can to put fannies in the seats. There's no NFL competition, so it should be easier. If we lever the new stadium, higher academic standards, and a continued good product, into P5 membership - which should really be everyone's goal - filling the stadium would be infinitely easier.

So I vote for a 50,000 seat Aztec stadium with good sightlines, futbol compatibility, decent parking/public transportation options, and $2.50 beer (well, that last is unattainable but it's fun to dream).

PS, most of us posters remember when Jack Murphy Stadium was open to the view of the mountains to the East. That's my idea of feng shui. It's no coincidence SDSU's architect is making that central to the design.
